Re: Teens hanging out at train stations and bus stops

I used to live in a little village in northern France. Only two buses a day stopped at the bus stop in the village centre, but the local yoof still clearly considered it to be the local hotspot.

Teenagers know something about bus stops that us oldies don't .

Re: Teens hanging out at train stations and bus stops

coming from UK where we like a bit of anarchy every now and again, I actually like bumping into the odd antisocial teen at a Swiss railway station - it reminds be of home, where sometimes rules are broken. Edgy, I know...

Re: Teens hanging out at train stations and bus stops

at least we can see them there and counsel them in their behavior. Perhaps they are looking for attention (good or bad) which cannot be found at home, thus an opportunity for us to help them

I slightly remember in one city, can't recount the exact details, but I do recall in order to get rid of the teenagers they played loud classical music! The teens hated it!...LOL They stopped congregating in that area too.

Re: Teens hanging out at train stations and bus stops

This is one of the things i love about Switzerland.

In London if you see a group of hooded youths hanging out smoking weed and drinking on a street corner/bus stop/train station etc... i would advise most people to stay well away.

Here in Zug when you walk pass this demographic they always say 'good evening'.

I find it highly amusing.

cheers

Re: Teens hanging out at train stations and bus stops

Growing up in southern california, we used to hang out at the local pool hall and play Gauntlet and table top configuration of Arkanoid for hours. We'd try to scrape enough money together to send a few of us to loiter in front of the local super market and ask strangers to buy us a bottle of cheap whiskey or vodka or something, enough to get us all lit.

This was a dicy activity, as it was technically illegal and grounds for arrest, or the people would just take our money, go inside the store, go out a side door, and we'd never see it again. so then we'd be broke AND boozeless.

this was late 80s "war on drugs" obsessed america where pot was SRS BSNS and the stuff the kids do here at the bus stops would get your ass in jail. heh. "land of the free" my ass!

good times, good times...

If you can solve the problem of bored youth hanging around stations you will be a very rich man. Where else can they go?

I don't particularly like it, but I can't think of anywhere else they could go (friends house? -- not in mine !! etc) and generally they are just loud. If you interact with them some of them can be quite nice.
We're in a country with enough bunker space for every person, can't we just stick the teenagers there every Friday night for a few years?

OH.. I think I just understood the point of military service.

Whatever they are smoking, those "public transportation areas" often are the areas with a bit of life. The teenagers are not yet allowed to drink wines and spirits and do not have enough money for such things anyway. Often are bored. And try to meet at places where all can go to fairly easily. So that meeting at rail-stations and at worst even bus-stations makes sense.

Loud teens ? Isn't that normal ? The voices are still relatively high and often just reflecting the "change", and they all want to get heard

Oh, 30 ! Reminds me of the old slogan Trau keinem über dreissig ---- Never trust a chap over thirty I am 62 now and do NOT feel like an old man when getting to a "youngish" crowd by chance. A lot depends on YOU .....

What's the big deal as long as they stay peaceful and don't start fighting or vandalizing stuff?

Sorry, my husband and I are new to Switzerland, and we were wondering-- what else would you fart out of? Is there another "Swiss way?"

Re: Teens hanging out at train stations and bus stops

In fact, overall Swiss teens tend to handle their "teen rebellion years" quite well. There is no epidemic of teen pregnancies or teen unemployment for example. Most handle their extra-curricular activities in a responsible manner, especially compared to some other countries.

Anyways, teens are teens, everywhere the same. If you think they are better here than anywhere else because they bonjour you while you pass them, uhm....ayit.

Re: Teens hanging out at train stations and bus stops

I have no doubt that a lot of the teenagers who hang out in such public places have no other options.

Would you hang out there if you lived in a palace? No you would invite your mates to your private rooms at home and that would be the end of it.

I was lucky enough to have a bedroom at my parents' house which was large enough to have a pool table and room for a sofa. Why the hell would I want to hang out at a bus stop etc?

And as for bringing in laws to stop this activity after say 8pm. Well that just shows that a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. Have these people who suggest such things talked to the local community institutions who are dealing with these issues? My guess is no.

Depending on the weather, there are many other places they could go to that don't cost anything, such as along the lake or in a public park for example. But then, some people might complain about that too .

In my view, there is no problem with youngsters wanting to assemble in a public location of their choosing. It lends life and animation to the place. That being said, I do have a problem with those who systematically trash the place or harass passersby. There, a little more police work would be welcome: not jail though, just "forced clean-up duty".
