This has to be the biggest gouge of all time. We are paying top dollar to stay in the Sheraton Davos. You would think that they could see their way to letting their guests hookup to the Internet as part of the deal, as it has been ages since we have had to pay in for Internet access in a Hotel).

However, the Sheraton want to charge TWENTY FIVE CHF per day for Internet access. They then have the gall to all it a "feature".

How much do you pay for the room per day ? And I think there are guests who do NOT need an internet-connection, who in case would be paying FOR YOU.

Can't see what i pay for the room has got to do with it but i assure you it is not insignificant. The cost of sharing out a broadband connection nowadays is bugger all to the power of less.

If we followed your "logic" then we would require discrete charges for every facility on offer. I have really long showers and use lots of toilet paper but I don't pay more than a Swiss German masochist who loves an ice cold shower and uses a bidet. Your argument is illogical

Umm... so you think there is a hotel that wouldn't have internet anyway? Or that they would need to buy additional bandwidth because of customer traffic? *)

Joining the chorus of peeve peeps. I've instructed the office to skip booking any place that charges for access. Works out well, I don't like Sheraton style living anyway, and all the small places happily compete with basic amenities.

*) OK, yes, granteed, a hotel will have to set up a basic traffic filter and bandwidth limiting if they want to survive the younger generation's media habits.

You can get your own place with free wi-fi through www.airbnb.com; my husband and I have had great experiences with their service (I have no financial or commercial interest in this, just wanting to help out).

Haven't been there yet, we are booked for December. Won't be paying the 25CHFs on principle and will battle through with the 3G on our phones. A pox on their houses.
You have booked a hotel for December
You know that internet costs you 25 CHF
You feel bad about it

Now there are two things you can do:
1. complain in advance about it on some internet forum
2. find another hotel

What would you do?

Did the houses get upgraded to a hotel? Cool. Maybe it could be a great idea for a board game. On second thought, nah, it would never work.

According to the tripadvisor reviews, it seems like a very decent hotel.

MOST such discreet charges are of course INCLUDED in the general price. That you ask for considerations of hotels to be logical proves that you did not understand

A) the costs of that hotel look as follows

Sortieren nach: Preise aufsteigend

Währungskonverter*
Zimmerfotos

Classic Zimmer, Nichtraucher: Doppelbett

  • Flexibler Preis + Frühstück Von 225 CHF
  • oder 16.000 Starpoints

Kleines Zimmer Im Stil Eines Schweizer Chalets; 17 Qm; Blick Auf Die Berge; Balkon; Badewanne Oder dusche; Internetzugang.
  • 172-183 sq ft / 16-17 m²
  • Blick auf die Berge oder das Tal
  • Moderne Möbel aus hellem Holz
  • Frisch renoviert
  • Internet über W-LAN gegen Aufpreis

and if somebody can afford CHF 225.-- for a night, the same person can also afford to pay CHF 25.-- for the internet connection

B) if YOU do NOT use the internet in a hotel and your neighbour does do so FREE OF CHARGE then you pay 50% of HIS costs, in this particular case CHF 12.50 .

C) you of course can argue that they had to establish the infrastructure anyway, and that the actual costs are in reality below CHF 3.-- per night. This in principle would be MY view, BUT ........ back to Square One !

-- This reminds me of a memorable collection-taxi-drive from Ta'iz to Sana'a. I paid about CHF 30.-- for the drive, and then paid about CHF 10.-- more to get the seat right in front with only the bag of Khat beside me but lots of space for myself and a splendid view ! It sometimes pays to pay for this or that privilege.

There are hotels where you have to pay for the privilege to use the TV or the hotel bar (in the Med and in the USA)

Sheraton Hotels tend to BE very decent !

But the suggestion above about www.airbnb.com looks brilliant. Just checked it up, and decided to take it into consideration in future.

Guess why there is a whole market of comfortable 4* 3*+ business hotels where this stuff is included in the rate.

If its just to check your email, there might be a complimentary PC corner in the lobby. Or use your iPhone personal hotspot.

Re: Sheraton Davos - ridiculous Internet access

Well, they make the business case calculation, and then they come to the conclusion that revenue from Internet is higher than potential drop in business due to customers deciding to go elsewhere.

It is rather simple, really, and it makes sense. Most of the customer in Sheraton and similar chains are business travelers. For those company pays for Internet anyway.

When I travel on business, I dont care how much the Internet access costs per day; I will take it anyway. This is the cost of doing business.

Incidentally, this is exactly the principle why data roaming costs were so expensive (and still are):
  1. most of users are business travelers
  2. for them company pays data roaming
  3. hence, reducing data roaming price will reduce revenues. Casual users & tourists won't use it anyway, so the total delta for an operator will be negative

Re: Sheraton Davos - ridiculous Internet access

I was the photographer on a job for one of the British broadsheets 3 years ago. It was an advertorial in conjunction with Swiss tourism & SBB. Myself & the travel journo from the paper were shipped around CH for 10 days on 1st class train tickets & were put up in swanky 5 stars in various places en route that they wanted 'reviewed' - nice work if you get it :-)

Anyway, we got to Lugano and were put up in this 5 star palace of tacky mid 90's Italian bling & the journo asked the front of house for the wifi code & she said "It's 20chf per hour"
The journo & I looked at each other & then he said to her "you are aware of who we are & why we are here, aren't you?"

"yes" she said, "but wifi is 20 chf per hour".

The journo took a deep breath & said "Ok, I'm not really the pulling rank sort, but do you want to take 5 mins to think about this & get back to me? - We'll be over by the bar"

5 mins later the duty manager came by and silently handed the journo a sheet of paper with the code on it

I broke down laughing when I opened page 2 and this popped up on the screen, mainly because I was going through page 1 thinking, "Alright, where's Wolli's rationalization?"

Someone needs to make a Captain Schweiz superhero image for Wolli. Whenever someone makes a complaint about Switzerland, Captain Schweiz to the rescue!

-"Shops close at 19:00 here, and my job requires me to work late. What the hell Switzerland?!"
*cue Captain Schweiz theme music*
-"Gruezi, expat! Do your shopping on Thursday evenings or on Saturday!"
-"Wow, that's completely inconvenient, but thanks Captain Schweiz, you're swell."
-"Don't dank me, just pay it forward."

Re: Sheraton Davos - ridiculous Internet access

I don't really understand why people feel that Wifi ranks alongside a bed and water as "should be provided free" when for years, people have been bringing their own phones to hotels because the rates are outrageous. Same with booze from the minibar.

Anyway, the whole concept of "free" is a strange one - a bit like Wolli said - there is some cost to the provision of WIFI in a hotel eg support desks, capital costs of fitting the system. That is passed onto you SOMEHOW - either in a fee for using it or built into the room rate

What annoys me more is when you stay in a Sheraton or Hilton and on top of the room charge you have to pay another EUR 20-25 for breakfast!! If I stay overnight somewhere breakfast is a minimum requirement and should be included in the room charge - there's no way I could eat EUR 20 worth of breakfast even if I wanted to and it costs them so little to provide it.
it isn't a question of what it costs them to provide it. what is that cup of coffee and gipfeli worth to YOU in the morning??

it costs Apple only some $100 to make the iPhone, but people are happy to part with $500 ...

Internet for a large building such as a hotel isn't cheap, but certainly not expensive enough to justify what they charge for it in luxury hotels. It's not a question of costs being passed on, but them charging what they do because they can. See Meeyat's explanation.

And just to be clear, if people will pay it, I don't see a problem and can't really blame them for doing it. But let's not pretend they're doing it out of necessity like Wolli did.

weird.. just like they can afford to let the poor have tap water for free, but the moment you set foot in a bar/resto, its CHF 5 for the same shite in a bottle.
