any particular model Tom 1234, Lucky Strike maybe ?
My son (he's Swiss) learnt about Speaker's corner in Hyde Park last week at his (Swiss) school.
It brought a smile to my face. I didn't even learn about at in the U.K. as school.

If, in the smoking referendums, you had taken all the nicotine addicts out of the vote (would you let a heroin addict decide whether the drug should be legalised), then the result would have been very different.
Wrong, 59% of the nonsmokers were against the Nichtraucherschutzinitiative.

Opinions ... facts ... etc

and if i was Swiss, I'd rather experts made those decisions for me. (I know how you are going to rely to this already).
"Experts"? Because experts are always so correct?

See, that makes you fundamentally different to "the Swiss". Having had direct democracy since what feels like the dawn of time, they will never give it up unless tragically forced to do so. It works here because it's been around for a long time and doesn't work elsewhere because it hasn't been around that long and is not ingrained the way it is here. No I don't agree with every decision the Swiss as a group take. But overall, they seem to be doing quite alright so far. Contrary to most other countries, I might add. "We" can't be all that wrong and incapable as you make us out to be, can we.

Not always but would like a medical doctor to perform open-heart surgery on you rather than a wood-cutter (even if there's a chance the doctor may make a mistake)?

What a funny thing to say.

I didn't say it was bad. I said I didn't think it was suitable for every decision that needs to be made.

And please don't think that the success of Switzerland is down to your own voting patterns.

Again, you're speaking for the Swiss. They're not all like you.
Most of my last Swiss neighbours hated smoking. It was the foreigners who were smoking.

If, in the smoking referendums, you had taken all the nicotine addicts out of the vote (would you let a heroin addict decide whether the drug should be legalised), then the result would have been very different.
You and Urs Max are not spokespeople for the Swiss.
Try and desist from pretending to be so.

If you don't like my posts, put me on ignore or just don't read them. I'm not breaking the rules of the forum.
I am Swiss and I totally agree with you re smoke entering a child's bedroom or having to close all windows to prevent this happening. As a Swiss, I was always taught that one's freedom stops when it causes serious harm or inconvenience to someone else.

If it was me in this situation, I'd go and discuss it nicely with the neighbour to see if something can be done- and they can smoke elsewhere. If that does not work discuss it with Asloca, the Regie/owner and go to mediation. Of course moving is a solution- but why should anyone be hounded out of a flat they like because to inconsiderate smoking. I am not anti-smoking as such and agree people have the right to smoke - but if it causes great inconvenience, especially to children.

Just had coffee with my 2 neighbours who smoke like chimneys and they both agreed- and yes, they are Swiss.

That must be a brand of cigarette that i've never heard of that fills rooms with smoke, from 3 metres away.

Did anyone here say it's okay that "smoke fills the neighbor's children's room"? I don't think so.

Though I wonder the same as Patsy. All your neighbors seem to be smoking very interesting cigarettes indeed. Maybe it's electronic ones, some of them produce way more smoke than regular cigarettes. Well steam, really.

Really, Samaire and "her chums" ? What's next? Insults, bile...?

60/40 is a pretty close match. Not all non-smokers were allowed the chance to vote.

The latter half of this thread has been about second-hand smoke inflicted on children.

Do they get to vote in your referendums? After all, they have to put up with the smoke too.

Is it because they lack the in-depth knowledge and adult-reasoning to vote?
No, that can't matter otherwise homeopathic treatment would never have got included in insurance-based healthcare costs.

So, who in your referendums is looking out for their interests?

You must be new here.

There a loads of threads about Swiss complaining about Asian cooking smells and Indians being banned from renting because of it.

Perhaps racism to strong a word for your PC ears. How about "discrimination."?

Oh you found the groan button. Took you long enough.

Slightly racist? You're seriously starting to embarrass yourself now. But just for your sake, you may replace "daily Indian cooking" with "daily cheese fondue".

The complaints here were mainly about the SMELL of cigarette smoke. Not about the supposedly harmful effects of a microgram of cigarette smoke that wafts your way from five blocks over.
