In the SBB smartphone app, at least the iPhone version, one step before the red "buy" button one can change the purchaser name and/or add additional passengers' names.

Well, this is strange and has never happened to us when travelling together...

AFAIK, the SBB App allows me to do the following:

1. Buy a ticket for the account holder (default)
2. Add passenger/s (account holder + companion/s; I show the tickets on my phone one at a time to the inspector)
3. Change passenger (I use this when only the wife travels; she logs into my account on her phone)

I can CONFIRM that I've done all 3 of the above several times on different routes with no problems...

they got shouted at because they forgot to change name and bought two tickets with the same name.

it was obvious that they were travelling together, but i've seen this happen at least 3 times. each time there was a long rant by the sbb inspector. i'm not sure if he actually fined them in the end.

Yep, and that would have been the course of action, had I not already purchased a still-valid 24hr ticket through my account earlier in the day.

The issue wasn't purchasing a ticket, it was accessing it to present to the inspector.
