Cold calls from SWICA

For the last few days, I've been getting numerous calls on my mobile from numbers I don't recognise. I generally ignore such calls and investigations trace them to the health insurance company SWICA, to offices in Lausanne and Délémont. I am not, nor have ever been, a client of SWICA. Anyone else getting such calls?

Re: Cold calls from SWICA

Well, I've had a couple with +0044 code numbers who immediately start speaking to me in German. I haven't bothered to find out who they say they are; I just hang up.

Re: Cold calls from SWICA

Get yourself a local caller-id app like Search.ch or Local.ch

This won't stop it but might help identify the caller quickly.

Re: Cold calls from SWICA

Hi, Swiss health insurances are actually no longer allowed to call since the first of June 2011.

You can complain at santésuisse.ch or konsumentenschutz.ch (unfortunately the websites are in German or French). Or - just tell the caller you are going to sue them

Re: Cold calls from SWICA

I just got a call on my cell , from a Swiss number 5 minutes ago.

They wanted to inform me that health inssurance will be 20% more expensive in 2017. I was angry and stressed but I answered: "No problem, thank you".

The number was 0041 625081687.

I googled the number and it is from Olten, google warned me it is fake but I am

still nervous and alone at home..

Re: Cold calls from SWICA

This directory lists the number as a call center. No reason to lose any sleep.

You did forbid them to call you any more, as well as to use or distribute your data in any kind of way, or sell them, didn't you?

Re: Cold calls from SWICA

I actually had one hang up on me this week. Normally I'm quite quick to say 'no, sorry, not interested', and then have them try to keep me on the line...this guy tried so hard to explain the offer in English, I let him go, then said 'We're quite happy with our insurance' and he cut the call without even saying goodbye

I guess they must succeed some of the time, but when they call me and tell me they have a special deal to 'lock in' premiums for the next five years at the current level, but our health insurance has actually been going down because of refunds from the insurers... it makes no sense.

This week the insurance that we have with our children gave a refund. Something about the authorities telling them they were charging too much, so now we get a little bit back...

Re: Cold calls from SWICA

I got a call from someone looking to "optimize" my insurance...

Since I was waiting for someone I chose to talk to him and tried to sell him my imaginary apartment in Madrid for 50,000 EUR. I asked for his details but he did not provide them

In the end he told me he doesn't want to buy the apartment and I told him I don't want to "optimize" my insurance - I think he got the point

We conversed a few mins more and he told me he is in Zurich area and is from Albania (Kosovo actually) and we ended up talking about Euro2016. We wished our teams best of luck for the next rounds... of course Albania hasn't made it through so he has more free time to call people

And the Swisscom subsidiary local.ch offers a free app which allows muting of everything that originates from a call center:

Um, where does it say that?

Would be strange they give Android customers something they won't give any of their others.

How can I block unwanted calls?
Unwanted calls can be blocked by your telephone provider – local.ch cannot block these calls. However, we can show you what you can do.
Unfortunately, individual phone numbers cannot be blocked – only anonymous incoming calls.
If these calls are made anonymously, you can activate service 99.

Service 99 activation:
  • Pick up the receiver and wait until you hear the dial tone.
  • Press the asterisk (*) key, enter 99 and then press the hash (#) key.
  • Wait for confirmation and hang up.
Service 99 deactivation:
  • Pick up the receiver and wait until you hear the dial tone.
  • Press the hash (#) key, enter 99 and then press the hash (#) key again.
  • Wait for confirmation and hang up.
We can give you a new telephone number free of charge in the event of annoyance calls (advertising calls are not considered an annoyance).

In the Google Play "blurb" and, within the application, "Settings: Mute telemarketing calls".

Re: Cold calls from SWICA

I stop them and then explain that I'm happy to talk to them just as long as agree to my terms of 10CHF per minute. Usually ends in silence and a hang up.

I usually consult the site when I find an unanswered number on my mobile or home phone. It's mostly scam calls to "optimize" my health insurance.

I have mentioned before in this forum that when I told one of these numbers not to call me again and remove me from their list, they told me I would have to pay for that service.

They are not actually from SWICA but an independent agent who sells products from SWICA, amongst others....

Get a referee whistle, give the guy fair warning and then let rip on the whistle.

They rarely call back for the full time whistle

The calls come from approx 10 different phone numbers (now saved as spam in my contacts) .. And according to tel.search.ch ... They are registered to SWICA .

Well someone must, otherwise these "services" would have probably stopped ages ago.

I simply never pick up any numbers I don't know. I can't be bothered to look them up. If anyone genuinely wants something, they'll leave a message so I can call them back.
