Are the swiss racist?

I have both Swiss and Canadian citizenship, and have lived in both countries about equal amounts of time.
I don't know if it's just because it's tabu in Canada, but I have trouble with some of the comments made to me by my swiss acquaintances (and relatives).

I get really annoyed when I'm involved in conversations where people are put down based on their ethnicity. Does anyone have an opinion of this? My friends in canada never talked like this ...

When I was in Canada I was proud to be swiss, I thought their neutrality was something special. Now I think they're just neutral because they think they're superior to everyone else...

Re: Are the swiss racist?

Nanda - if foreigners are new to this country, why are there over 1 million of us?

I can say that my wife's grandfather, an Italian, was treated like a second-class citizen when he sweated blood and tears assisting the build of the Gotthard tunnel.

The issue is, I am sure, greater when your appearance makes you look foreign. In a way, being a white male, you only notice I am foreign as I am smiling

Zurich -vs- The Boonies is another question; the Townies know there's a lot of foreigners here, don't hate them and to be "Swiss", they treat everyone with the same abruptness; in Boonieville, people have more time and courtesy but maybe never met a foreigner in their lives!

Hey Lob

This was my point. You cannot look at me and fail to know that I'm foreign. Esp not now after 4 weeks in the sun. But I don't think it's an issue for me at all. No more than anywhere else.

If anything, looking different makes me more recognisable and after a year of working in Schwerzenbach (village outside Duebendorf), everyone greeted me warmer when they met me outside shops etc.. Schwerzenbach also has a significant "overseas" population though.

I'm beginning to wonder if this issue is raised more because the swiss aren't being politically correct or that they're "more" racist than things back home - wherever that is?

Re: Are the swiss racist?

Yesterday I had one of the most shocking experiences in my time here in CH. I am currently looking for Pilates instructors to work in my studio and so, I registered the position with the RAV. Well, yesterday this woman from the RAV called me to inform me that they had someone who was interested in training to be a Pilates instructor and is looking for full time employement in this field.

"Great" I replied expecting to be given the CV or for them to try and arrange an interview. Instead the lady from the RAV responded with

"There's just one problem, she's black."

I was totally speechless! I cannot believe that a potential employer is informed about the race of an applicant as if it somehow mattered! I just cannot get over this blatant racist behaviour from a GOVERNMENT OFFICE!

I've always argued that racism is part of official policy in CH. The fact that someone from a government office communicated this so openly to you just demonstrates the fact.

Question is: do such government departments have policies in place to deal with racisim and discrimination, i.e. training courses for their employees, documented ways of dealing with situations etc. My guess is that no such policy or programme exists within the RAF.

If I were you I'd write to the director of the RAF and ask some very hard and direct questions.

In all of the other countries where I have lived (with the exception of Germany) someone would be fired and the possibly taken to court for that, and one of those countries includes South Africa.

Re: Are the swiss racist?

Ask any black person you work with about racism in der Schweiz.
Or even South Africans who are caucasian.

A British/Ghanian friend of mine (who left CH) was told "members" only when trying to get into some pubs.. and had to text people already in there to collect him.

SA friends have hate mail.

Look at a busy train - empty seats are often available where the person with dark skin is sitting..

Re: Are the swiss racist?

Are the Swiss racist? Well, yes some of them. But at least they did not invent racism. Racism is rampant all over the world. I would not say that it is a Swiss problem, but one of humanity in general. Will it ever cease to exist? I doubt it.

Really? Just as a matter of interest how long have you been in Switzerland to make such an observation? I'm sure all those people in Switzerland who have been denied jobs because of their race wouldn't call it petty.

well considering i am swiss and have spent a while here its pretty easy to make these types of observations...its also easy to compare australia to switzerland with regards to race. ive had many person experience with race related bull so from experience its allot friendlier here than in the so called "multicultural" australia!!

yes I'm not denying you are Swiss, but please tell me, how long is it since you were back in Switzerland? Does being Swiss somehow give you some sort of extra qualification to speak on issues of racism? It seems many people with darker skin report a different view to yours, and many have lived in other countries including Australia.

Raynbo, I know what you are trying to say, but mark is more correct on this one. Australian racism is more redneck style (most evident in the ignorant and uneducated, aggressive but otherwise patchy and shallow). Swiss racism, where it exists, seems to be more entrenched and sophisticated (for want of a better word), but with great impact on the livelihood of those discriminated against. You have the little red book, you have so many rights that deter people from discriminating against you. Take that away and you might be singing a different tune.

As Mark pointed out, in Australia and other countries, anti-discrimination laws have sharp teeth. In Australia, if you were an HR Manager and you threw out all job applications with names ending in -ic, you could even face serious jail time, as well as your boss. But it happens here, believe me. Here, no such laws exist to my knowledge, and if they do they are rarely enforced.

Re: Are the swiss racist?

I could say sooooooooo many things (and would want to say soooooo many things)... BUT
I will just quote my favourite song from Avenue Q if that's okay, as it sums up my opinion just perfectly:

"Everyone's a little bit racist
Sometimes.
Doesn't mean we go
Around committing hate crimes.
Look around and you will find
No one's really color blind.
Maybe it's a fact
We all should face
Everyone makes judgments
Based on race."

(you should read the whole lyrics - or better: go see the musical - but it's way too long to post here: http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/avenu...ebitracist.htm)

Re: Are the swiss racist?

Sorry SnowGirl but maybe all the other people you know are racist..

I grew up in a multi-cultural area where race (for my friends, me and people in general) was never an issue.

Dont assume that because something is true for you (and yours) that it is true for everyone..

Especially that particular ill.

Thanks

Re: Are the swiss racist?

Its a fact the most racist people on earth are the human race....Discordia says the italians arent a race...so what race do they belong to then? Roman, mediterranean, south european ,european, olivine skinned ppl black haired people, caucasion, pan caucasion, darker skinned than ure average caucasion, speak italian, eat pizzas, ride lambrettas make cool cars, eat a lot of ice ceam , make grappa surely that alone makes them a race.....swear alot, best lovers in the world etc italion stalions etc good at football hey ! they are just like the Swiss....who are right next door so cant be a million genetic miles/kilometers away.
We could go down the biblical route of Noahs sons of Ham Japeth and Shem that would give us our 3 main human sub divisions. note: all still of the human race. then the 13 super family of languages as per the tower of Babel....still all human race note. Do not include Swiss german in this.
Then theres the scientific angle...evolution ...but that doesnt explain the Chavs..cos we all go back the same genetic pair as dna tests will show.
Is it racist to call pygmies short?
Theres a basic rule here we all forget...love thy neighbour..that rule just about covers this whole topic and a few more.
The grossist form of racism i ever came across was when someone told me this joke.....
A family of Canibals on their way home......
*see already racist*
son says to his mum:"whats for dinner Mum?"
"Beans"
"awe not beans again Mum"
"Yeah HUMAN beans"

Re: Are the swiss racist?

Most of the discussion is around Swiss Germany and racism. Is it the same over in the French speaking part?. I never really noticed it previously when I lived there , but in saying that most people I knew were white western europeans.

Re: Are the swiss racist?

Before start, let me say hello, this is my first post here. Seems like a great forum.

Didn't read through all the "rules", so I hope I'm not committing any "faus pas" by posting directly...

To the post:

[quote=Wuluf]Sorry SnowGirl but maybe all the other people you know are racist..

Wuluf, dude, check our the musical, and try to lighten up - life's to short to pass it being angry...

On the substance, I think the fact that there are close to 400 posts on this issue clearly highlight that racism (I'll let the semantics lovers go into the definitions) is something that one is exposed to in Switzerland.

Having said this, I've also grown up in Asia, North America, and other parts of Europe, and Switzerland (and specifically Geneva) has one of the most multiculutral and diverse populations I've ever come across.

I've lived here long enough that to have Swiss friends, and they are really cool, tolerant and really not racist. I would venture a guess that many of the people that experience racism also have few Swiss friends (this is not an attach on anyone, so please don't jump down my neck on this sentence) My point is just that there seem to be parallel societies in Switzerland: the "locals" and the "foreigners" and the more these two groups start speaking and socializing together, the better as far as the topic of this forum.

Peace out.

ddiddo
