you can't have more chilli

The subject is funny but not the incident.

Me and my friends, we from time to time go for lunch at an asian take away around Josephstrasse (zurich). The place is callsed Jack's Place.
No doubts the food there is good. But the owner's are ... i think stupid .. they don't know how to treat the customers.

I am a spicy food lover. Hence I usually take some extra chilli from the table into by take away lunch box. The chilii is kept for everyone who takes a take-away.

The lady that overlooks the counter noticed it once that I take more than the normal quantity (2 spoons instead of 1) and warned me that it is too spicy . I said I dont mine, I like spicy.

To prevent me from taking chilli she started making/cooking my lunch order very very spicy, almost uneatable. I complaint , then she said you take too much of chilli. On which I said I want the lunch to be made normal and I will have chilli as per my need. It did not work.

I stoped visiting place. But during last week it was raining and friend of mine wanted to eat asian. I joined hin to avoid going to any other place.
As soon as I approached to add some chilis she complaint again and said you take too much chili so that you can share it with your other friends in office.

First I laughed at her thoughts, but then saw that she was serious and said that this is your last order, you should not come here anymore. I objected and said,
if you place the chilli pot on the table for customers then I wil have it.
If you want you can charge me some money. She called her husband (who cooks the food) from kithcen and then the arument heated up.
He started shouting loudly, you should not come here, you take this chilli for others etc..
Me and my friends felt humiliated and insulated. We argued that you should put instruction near the chilli pot, or ask us to pay for it. But you should treat your customers like this.
I insisted on returning my money as I felt insulted and did not like the service. My friends did the same. He scared us by saying that he will call the police if we did not leave the place but we stood there are asked him to call the police and we have no issues explaining the incident. After some heated argument we left returning them the ordered lunch boxes and no refund.

This place is off from our list and we would never visit it again for sure.

Has anybody here faced such a situation at mentioned place or else where.
Is it worth making a complaint to the consumer court (if it exist)

Re: you can't have more chilli

good rant and i'm on your side but what do you expect a consumer court to do? the owner can refuse to serve you for whatever silly reason he has.

vote with foots and go somewhere else or bring your own sambal and solve the situation that way.

Re: you can't have more chilli

I work round the corner.... I suggest we get as many people as possible to go in tomorrow lunchtime and demand more chilli, then walk out.

That'll make you feel better.

I probably take the other side on this...

You agree the food is good, and just because you're only basically allowed one spoon of chilli and not two you shout blue murder!

Ha ha exactly! If the food is good then be grateful and don't piss off the chef!

Why alienate customers and get mad over extra chili, I mean is that where they're chipping away at your profit margins, really?

....... only "Jack's Place" you reckon?

Water off a ducks back in my opinion.

You'd best get used to the Swiss interpretation of the word "Service".

Re: you can't have more chilli

It might be that the chef takes pride in authentically cooking food with the right amount of spicing and seasoning.

However, the paying customer is always right, and it is their choice to do as they please, once the transaction has taken place.

But, although not good business practice, an establishment also has the right to serve (or not) whom the please.

Re: you can't have more chilli

Our favourite local Vietnamese restaurant will cook any dish to order with a spicy rating of 1 - 5. Well, not officially, but when we ask for it spicy, the waiter always ask "how spicy?".

Not sure whether this complaint warrants a 400 something word essay on the incident.

Re: you can't have more chilli

I was agreeing fully with the rant until I read the bit about asking the chef to cook it extra mild (you say they cooked it more spicy and you complained) just to add the chilli.

So you want food with no flavour apart from the chilli?

Why not just buy a bottle of the chilli sauce and dip cheap bread in it?

Re: you can't have more chilli

Jack may not have his place much longer, if this is how he treats his guests...

When I was in the restaurant/hospitality industry, this would have been a specific example of how not to treat your guests. How much could a spoonful of chili cost? 20 rappen, if even that much? Would another 20rp completely destroy the profit margin on all the food sold in that transaction? If this guest goes back to his office and says, "I got this from Jack's Place," isn't that advertisement? Might that not send more people back to the business?

Instead, this "business" threw paying customers out on their asses over pocket-change. Don't go back there, and advise your coworkers not to go their either.

I don't think he asked for "extra mild," but instead for it to be cooked normally, so he could add the amount of spice that he had found to be to his liking.

Also, cooking can transform (perhaps in this case, intensify) the flavor of the spice, so he might not like the chili added in the cooking process, but only after.

Sounds to me like the restaurant were trying to be helpful but this one customer was just bleedin awkward. Complains when it's too mild so has to put loads of chilli sauce on it, then complains it's too hot when they cook is specially for him. I'm not altogether surprised that the might feel pissed off with him.

Oh, and it also sounds like they called his bluff on the "I like it _really_ hot" front, and that's what's really pissed him off.

Does any of this sound like a correct way to treat customers? Just cook your damn food normally and let him add the complementary chili he wants. He never asked them to cook specifically for him, whatever disagreement resulting from that was caused by them complicating things. You don't push a service he didn't ask for on a customer and then kick him out when you perceive him to be ungrateful about it.

Did I suggest it was? No, I'm simply positing the other side of the argument, as we've only had the complainer's version to go on so far.

Re: you can't have more chilli

I Imagine, for them, its kinda like steak.

Some chefs refuse to cook it well done and you get it the way they see best. (I like my steak well done but had to quickly learn Pink is OK once i moved to central Europe )

Maybe they felt a little insulted that you cover their food in chili.

I also feel little insulted when my husband throws salt & pepper on something I cooked without first tasting.

Anyways... Situation escalated out of control... best thing to do is vote with your feet or as grumpygrapefruit said.... get revenge LOL
