Re: Weather!

Terrible time for fruit and veg growers. With strawberries they are down 30% on what they can sell, and even good fruit just do not keep once picked, and shops have to throw away, sort out and repackage- and then have to deal with grumpy customers asking for refunds. Same for lettuces with leaves marked by slug feast, etc. And many autumn veggies just cannot be planted at the moment, despite plants being ready.

Disaster for the growers- but also for us, as prices will rise accordingly- (and imports increase to the further detriment of local growers).

Farmers here are getting desperate as they are normally about to make the second cut for hay (les foins) by now- and they still have not been able to make the first cut. At this rate they will be short of fodder for the winter.

Terrible too for our birds of prey, kites, buzzards, and many types of owls, as well as our resident house martins and swallows- who have not been able to hunt properly to feed young. And for hares, deer, etc- who give birth in long grass so young will be hidden (at least they are not getting mowed and torn up by the combine harversters!)
Not to mention poor strawberries rotting away in the rain

Re: Weather!

They re rotting in their punnets because they are too ful of water- indeed. We bought some at our local French market the other day- and didn't have time to eat them on the day- and had to throw them away. If you buy any, eat them asap on same day ...

Re: Weather!

Maybe Swiss farmers need to go over to growing something more suited to the climate, and leave strawberries to the Spaniards?

Re: Weather!

Considering the weather conditions in CH, it's about the time to take some CHF and plan holidays in Spain for strawberry quest. I think it may be worth it now since the weather doesn't wanna cooperate with and also with the Brexit vote around the corner, it may swing either way.

Well you know, it rained a LOT.
Look at http://meteonews.ch/de/News/N5275/Monatsbilanz-Mai-2016
and the graph there, the blue colour shows the difference from the medium value from the last 30 years. And i.e. in Luzern there's been a new record since 1864. So I'd say it a bit extra ordinary spring this year.

Re: Weather!

Indeed- a freak Spring. The Valais have ben growing fabulous, tasty strawberries for a VERY long time- with 100x the taste of agro-industrial imported strawberries that keep fairly well but taste of nothing, picked before they are ripe.

So the climate is changing, except when it isn't?

Re: Weather!

Time to shave those legs, girls!!

It's going to be hot and sunny this week!! 30-32 degrees by Thursday!!

Finally, i can get my fan blowing instead of sleeping in socks!!

And wear a dress!! And sandals!!

By Sunday, i and others, shall probably be complaining about the heat...

Climate is always variable. It is the long term trend that matters - not one year spring or even a whole year of total darkness and rain.

Re: Weather!

Well, at least it seems to have timed it right this week. It is the summer solstice today/tomorrow after all.

Re: Weather!

Very pleasant today- sunny- not very hot, but 22C, nice. And of course all the international visitors left the region yesterday... ah well, they had a fabulous time all the same.
