Re: Weather!

RAIN! Blessed rain. Supposed to keep going until Monday, so hope we do get a steady downpour for a while.

Hope that too.....there is still so much left from the summer in the allotment (blessed year that was for us gardeners) and the winter veges would profit as well.

There is not many a cosier thing, than to sit in the conservatory and watch the rain fall while being snuggled up and drinking a cuppa

Re: Weather!

Wetterkanal this morning showed the ski runs getting their first serious dusting of snow, which is a rapid change from the dry landscapes shown on Wednesday.

Question for anyone who knows please...

When the groundwater table is so dry, how does snow affect this?

True, but it takes 6" of snow to equal just 1" of rain, so we'll need a lot of snow - and that sounds good to me!

What I'm looking for is, what percentage goes to replenishing the water table, and what percentage stays on the surface in sub zero temperatures. I've been reading about it online and getting differing results. Also, what effect, if any, does a long dry summer have on the stability of snow r.e. avalanches.

I don't think you could expect any general rule for your first question. How much the snow melts vs. how much evaporation, which would give the figure you're looking for, will vary hugely with various factors including ground, air and snow temperatures, sun exposure, altitude and relative humidity. I'm sure one could create a mathematical model for this (indeed, I'm sure it has been done) but I suspect the resulting range of values for the percentage you're looking for would be so wide as to make it useless as a predictor.

Early season snow stability is certainly affected by the ground temperature, but not directly by the amount of water in the ground. Once there is snowpack on the ground the surface temperature will reach and remain at 0 degrees. Underground humidity and starting temperature will clearly affect how long this takes, but once it's there any effects would be minimal at most.

Re: Weather!

And we have snow!

Not laying yet, but definitely snow rather than rain or sleet. Of course not changing the tyres over for another couple of weeks are we.

Snow settled overnight here at 1350m, and it's still snowing heavily now. Probably no more than a couple of cms so far, but encouraging nonetheless.

It's falling in big fluffy flakes here now.

I was planning to change them on one car today anyway, so this is a timely reminder.

Rain yesterday and cold - and it started to snow at 7am today + bise.

All white, but only about 2 cm- and now all quiet on the Western Front.

Autumn as a season has disappeared, straight from warm sunny days to snow!

Oh I dunno, we've had autumn colours for a few weeks, which is the only good thing about it anyway. Other than that I'm more than happy to go straight from sunbathing to skiing

I did mine yesterday afternoon. Twenty minutes in all - quicker than phoning the garage and driving there.

Which can be a problem as the leaves are still on the trees.
