Re: Weather!

If a Norman said something clever, was that an example of Norman Wisdom?

Quote:
You are not making any sense. If the language the Normans spoke wasn't French, how could Anglo-Saxon peasants "distort" (sic) the French language as you claimed a couple of posts ago?

Friday geek moment...Sorry, and I don't profess to know the full timeline or story behind it because I've have a jumble of sources over the years that keep adding a bit.

French as we know it was only standardised within the last 300yrs, maybe less. Before then, it was a jumble of two more distinct versions, langue d'oïl in the north and langue d'oc in the south, plus a multitide of patois dialects. So, what was accepted as 'French language' at the time of the Norman invasion was considerably different to modern French, and this was largely because a few versions of the language came over the Channel with the Normans. First was from William and his court, then came another version with the Plantagenet kings and another with Eleanor of Aquitaine and her descendents, so the Anglo-Saxons were bombarded with a proper mish-mash of distinctly different dialects.

Sources:
1. Plantagenets were from Anjou whose capital is Angers which is twinned with Wigan, so I used to get random info about Angers through the letter box during their annual cultural exchanges.
2. My German teacher did a talk about the evolution of western European languages in an effort to explain why Switzerland has 4 official languages, and she mentioned French standardisation in law.
3. My 2nd favourite edition of QI was about France, including the amazing fact that French peasants used to hibernate. Also got the langue d'oïl / langue d'oc part from QI.

I've got a memory like a very sodden leaky sponge, so if some details have slipped out, Sorry!

Old/Middle English is pretty different to modern English too but the links are there.

Re: Weather!

Sunny and bright this morning- time to go and plant those bulbs and wrap up a few delicate plants. One especially that was given to me by a wonderful EF member before she returned to live in London. Very very special.

Re: Weather!

The nights are nasty here lately - as soon as it's dark, freezing cold wind and rain starts as if trying to be secret about it - but my solar bulbs picked up enough light today to turn on. So that means, I got enough light today too.

We certainly did, we had plenty of gorgeous Indian summer days in October this year.

It’s such a shame that Omtatstat is living under a perpetual cloud.

Sorry the weather article is in German. I guess you can't read it.

You should be careful. Sitting all day in the solarium can become a substiture reality!

I can read German perfectly well thank you, never been in a solarium in my life and have no intention of starting now.

Some of us actually have lives and go out into the sunshine and the real world, maybe you should try it sometime?

It was sunny here Monday (as usual in Switzerland ) and Tuesday. And just now the sun is breaking through the grey clouds again.
Leaves in all colours, some are bright red (I wish they were like this all summer, it's gorgeous).

Who would have thought calling a system software 'windows' would have such a devastating effect on some people's perception, eih?

No need to start discussion about artist. It's the weather thread - and I just always loved this one, which is actually much longer.
