They say its getting down to minus 15 in Zurich next week. An exaggeration maybe?

Meteocentrale was forecasting we'd be down to -11C overnight here on Monday, but that's changed; only down to -7C that day now. Mind you just looking at the forecast now and it's forecasting -13C overnight next Saturday - and only getting up to -7 during the day too.

We have several cherry trees around us (700m) that are blooming (!) Light dusting of snow overnight; expecting low of -11 Tuesday, according to Bergfex. More snow next week from over the Raetikon.

My MeteoSwiss weather app is usually pretty spot-on and it's showing a low of -3 for next Wednesday night / Thursday morning (not -15). But who knows... maybe it will change by then. That's for Greifensee (canton Zurich).

It's been snowing here all morning and is starting to accumulate a bit. It's lovely. I am glad I don't have to be out driving today, though...

Along La Côte we got a couple of cm of heavy wet snow yesterday. Warmed up to 4° and has mostly melted. Except for the piles I made pushing it around. Today it’s almost 3°, cloudy but no precipitation expected until Tuesday.

It may be inaccurate, but it’s not an exaggeration. I’ve experienced -15deg at night in Zurich in the 1980s. It killed my father-in-law’s hedge…

And the weather in Zurich in Jan to Feb 2012 - that was pure ice when venturing out during the day - minus 10 to minus 20C in the city:

One of the most beautiful days I can remember. The snow that fell last night is beautiful and only deep enough not to need shoveling. Footprints of a deer across the lawn. Just the faintest breeze lifts the lightest snow off the tree branches, sending the crystals dancing like thousands of diamonds through the air. Temp just above 0C.

Yes, snow, hoarfrost and bright sun- and our local ski resort ready for the holidays.

And now- disaster. Far too warm and raining non stop, grey and miserable- EVen top resorts in the Alps are having to close. What a shame. Not very festive, to say the least.

Looks rather unpleasant in the US Midwest. Even Texas mighty cold.

That explains why Montana and Wyoming have a population density similar to Siberia

Anyway, it should be interesting to spend a couple weeks of winter vacation over there.

We'll have our first green Christmas in our chalet. Hope that snow will come soon.

I was hoping the gorgeous, sunny frosty weather and dusting of snow would stick around for Christmas. It was lovely and seasonal with being so much as to be annoying and stop us from doing things. ( except for the freezing rain, I could have done without that)

I’ve obviously been in balmy Switzerland too long… ‘cause this is freaking cold even for me.

That made me smile a bit. My children read somewhere there's minus 30 in some parts of Canada and were musing about moving there. (they really like it when we have snow ...)

I have friends in Vancouver literally trapped in the apartment. Roads and sidewalks covered in snow. No buses or trains running.

Oh, it’s beginning to rain there now!

Not directed at you but did anyone wish for Global Warming which is the cause of all this very-frequent violent weather - windy, wet, hot or freezing and changing rapidly?

In Cheyenne, Wyoming, the temperature dropped, in 3o minutes, from 6C to -16C!

It may get down to -56C in parts of the U.S. today.

I guess it's not related to climate change. It's just how a cold front travels above the continental mass in North America. Same thing happens in Russia and _stan countries.

Europe has the Norwegian, Baltic and North sea that act as buffers for cold fronts.
