Re: Weather!

Every time it rains and I see my Swiss landlord he laughs, points vaguely at the rain and says "Haha London weather. We have London weather today". Every. F/cking. Time.

It's rained so much in Basel that even he is beginning to slowly realise that when I do return to London, each time it rains I'm going to point vaguely at it and say "Haha Basel weather. We have Basel weather today".

Well I come from Italy I'm used to lots of sun (not during the weekends, of course... ) and no wind (except Fohn)
In the next life I'll try Valais

Re: Weather!

Hey, welcome, bienvenue en Romandie. Yep, very unlucky with your arrival weather. The weather inb Northern Italy has been pretty dire lately according to the weather forecasts though! Just come back from 2 weeks in Southern Sicily, and we had great weather- but very windy some days and it was not the Foehn! Our hire car was covered in Sahara sand!

Lausanne and the lake is wonderful in Summer- won't be long now. Bonne chance. It's pretty dire up here in the Neuchâtel Jura mountains

Which part of Italy are you from. Our friends in Tuscany say this Spring has been awful so far!

It's raining cats and dogs outside right now, but my neighbour is adamant that "it's raining like a pissing cow" ("Il pleut comme vache qui pisse")!

Do you have your own regional / national colourful weather expressions? I am curious from a linguist point of view to see how many animals are associated with weather expressions.

My dad used to say it was raining like a bovine urinating on flat shale. So, same old cow.

i can't think of animal idioms about weather, common expressions used here:
"vien giù come dio comanda" - it's coming down (downpouring) like god commands
or "c'è il diluvio (universale)" - a biblical reference to the great flood (in italian it's heavy rain not flood)
for a sunny hot day: "c'è un sole che spacca i sassi" - there's a sun that cracks the stones

You're right, Basel and Zürich on average have almost twice the rainfall that London experiences.

The rainfall in both Swiss cities happens mostly in the summer months. On any given day in the summer the chances of rain are around 65% - which is why I always politely decline BBQs that are arranged a couple of months in advance - basically there's a 2:1 chance it's going to be a washout.

Something else to depress you: January, February, and March average more hours of sunshine than June, July, August and September despite the shorter daylight hours in the winter months.

Summer in northern Switzerland means cloud, rain, and lots of it.

Re: Weather!

Advance warning time again. Thunderstorms due tomorrow through into Friday so batten down anything loose (high winds as well) and make sure pets are tucked up safe indoors.

Found this on the ch.ch website:

https://www.ch.ch/en/flood-risks/

which led me to these other useful links:

http://www.natural-hazards.ch/home/c...ds/floods.html

http://www.hydrodaten.admin.ch/warnu...orhersagen/en/

http://www.meteoswiss.admin.ch/home.html?tab=alarm

Must cut the grass tomorrow before it rains! First cut of the year and still not done yet.

Re: Weather!

last week 50° and red rain, aka sahara sand, just as I had cleaned the bloody windows, it's cooled down to a agreeable 30°-32° and rain for the weekend.

Re: Weather!

Job done! Grass cut and so it can chuck it down now for all I care. Was passing a foot high in some places and poor little mower was getting jammed up with the grass it was trying to deal with. No wonder it took me an hour to do. At least the garden was in the shade so I didn't get too hot doing it.

Re: Weather!

Looks like Switzerland will have "Bloody lovely" weather until around 6pm tomorrow - at which point the contents of the Med will be dumped upon our lofty peaks.

Northerners can look forward to all day rain of around 25mm, south of the Alps though they are expecting over 70mm.

So some sort of rain coat might be in order

Re: Weather!

Thunderstorms coming in later today though no rain predicted with them for my area at least. Then the rain tomorrow. What do you expect? It's a holiday tomorrow of course so it's bound to rain.
