Boiling up here in the mountains- but always gets cooler at night. with shutters closed and all windows wide opened creating a breeze, it's lovely. Those old houses with 90cm wide stone walls keep warm in extreme winter, and cool in Summer.

It's hard to imagine the Jura "boiling" when in winter it breaks regularly all records for lowest temperatures.

Re: Weather!

Well we are closer to the sun

Yep- minus 42.8 C is the minimum recorded temperature just up the road from here. 42 in the sun now, with a little breeze to help.

Re: Weather!

We are roasting here already, and it's not even really hot yet.

The house was built in the 80s, and retains heat like you wouldn't believe. And temps don't cool off at night here. We are in a sort of bowl, the cooler evening air from the Rossberg passes us by.

I am terrified for the Belltie, who has a serious respiratory condition. I've asked my neighbors for their permission to turn on our air conditioner (lest the barely audible compressor noise disturb them), but (not surprisingly) they said no.

I'm thinking a trip to Sweden might not be a bad idea...

...There are a number of things people can do to help themselves. These include:
  • sticking one's hands in cold water
  • having a lukewarm shower rather than a cold one
Interesting. I can get overheated quite easily and I find keeping my feet in cold water does more for me than putting hands in cold water. Also cold showers work great, but that's just me.

This is well known, your veins in your feet and especially wrists are close to the surface so cold water cools the blood circulation, thus making you feel more comfortable.

Cold showers work for me too when my wife says no and the au pair is on her night out

I'm sitting in the kitchen, door wide open, with a chilled apple juice, fan going, feet up.
Wonderful!

Re: Weather!

I'm in Zurich today doing a bit of shopping, (it's sale time you know) and I cannot believe how many people are swimming in the lake. I have seen more people in Lake Zurich today than I have seen in 7 summers in Lac Leman. And by the way, why are all of those thousands of sunbathers not working, huh?

Possibly tourists? Or practicing for next week's lake swim

We all know the Genevans do all the hard work while the Zuricher reap the benefits and laze around their lake!

Cucumber G & T works very well in this heat wave...I wonder if I should bathe my feet in it too?

That would be a terrible waste of gin. Cold water will do the job just as well.

Météo Swiss issued level 4 extreme heat warning for Vaud and Geneva. This is getting serious. And I am finally warm! Heil Switzerland!

Hum. Only rates a dark green on the Meteocentrale.ch hazard warning site. How bad do they need it to get to hit orange or red? 50+?

Re: Weather!

Basel is level 5! But look at the Rhine - a lovely 20°; I had a swim earlier this evening.

Isn't it great to live in a country where the rivers and lakes are so clean you don't think twice about going for a swim when it's hot? I love it!

Although I came across a few "unpleasant" floating items on Lake Geneva today while SUPing...not all that clean and I was concentrating so much as not to fall in it! I still cannot believe people throw their cigarettes into the water in full view, unashamed.

Well yes, Swiss smokers don't give a shait whether they liter, pollute or poison a few non-smokers around. And as for Lac Leman, don't forget about duck fleas :>
