Re: Weather!

so will we- but with bug screens on said windows- one of the first things we did when we bought this house- worth its price in gold.

Been outside watching the Jupiter and Venus 'joining' up (only looks like it ... the are a loooong way apart) with the spotting scope- cooling down nicely and a little gentle breeze- lovely.

Yes direct sunlight is often 10 deg warmer than in the shade where temp is recorded. Compound with the Swiss (lack of) breeze and the heat index in the sunshine must be pushing 50! And apparently the heatwave starts tomorrow

Re: Weather!

It was lovely in the garden at 7 o clock this morning when I was weeding the flower beds. I had the grass cut before 9 am and then stayed indoors in the cool for most if the day.
It's down to 26° on the patio now so I'm enjoying a nice glass of wine watching the stars.

Lucky you "up North"! Here in Geneva, it is no relief to be outside, unless you are right by the lake.

Re: Weather!

It's been boiling up here ... in full sun, the thermometer at midday was ... 49C! Cooled nicely tonight - and with all the windows opened we should all get a good night's sleep.

Re: Weather!

I was up before the sun, getting the husband ready to travel. The moon was amazing. It's the third perfectly clear day in a row. Later, it will be brutal, but it's lovely now.

Re: Weather!

Even when the water temp. is 30°, I find that I can only stay in the pool for about two hours max., before I have to get out to warm up.

Although, I did make an exception, last night at 10.30, as I needed to cool off - and it was just about bearable, under the moon.

How about nearer 15 or 20? My other gauge which doesn't get direct sunlight was saying 27 at the time - 16 degree difference!

Yes, any breeze would be nice. We do have a couple of fans going to stir the air about otherwise it just seems so stuffy all the time. I'm still trying to work out whether to have windows closed and shutters too and have no air or close shutters, but keep some windows (not in the sun) open for any breeze that might decide to appear. Even if it's a hot breeze it feels better than no breeze at all.

When it gets like this I seriously consider becoming a nudist. Even underpants, shorts and a t-shirt are too much clothing!

Re: Weather!

Thermometer at 5am, 27 degrees. And 5AM is the coolest point of the day according to Meteocentrale.

The only way to get any sort-of cooler air into the house is to open the windows between 3 and 5 am. Assuming there is any air movement, which today there isn't. Can't open windows earlier, as the temps are still in the mid-30s even after nightfall. Windows must be closed and shutters drawn by sunrise if I'm to keep the house from heating up even further.

At 5am tried to take dogs for a walk. When I brought out the leads I got the 'Seriously? In this weather?' look. They decided a bumble around the garden was preferable.

Temp on the terrace hit 40 yesterday. The thermometer is in the shade, but the terrace is laid in dark granite, so likely there was heat retention from the stone.

Re: Weather!

I like to feel connected to the outside (I don't like having aircon at home as you cool down nicely but then lose all motivation to go out!) so keep the windows and balcony doors open almost all the time.

I've a small flat and all the windows face the same way so there's no through draft. If it gets very hot I ask my neighbour in the flat opposite to keep her front door open; if we both do that we do get a strong breeze running through.

The only time I close my windows is in the evening (only for the room I'm in) as otherwise the lights draw in all sorts of flying irritants.

I only rarely close my shutters but I keep the balcony sun blind down which stops any direct sun, and light curtains block the rest.

A ceiling fan in the bedroom means I sleep well whatever.

The Rhine's about 20° at the moment (it'll rise to 22/23 as the hot weather stays) so a swim/float in the river for 30-40 minutes is a great way to cool down.

Re: Weather!

I'm freaking out about the weather forecast for the weekend and I want to go someplace nice, where the temperature could be below 30° C during the day. Anny suggestions?

I am ironing.

I did mine at 8 o clock this morning. It wasn't so bad then.
Boy brought home a load of dirty clothes from his trip so I washed them last night after 9pm ( cheap rate electricity) hung them out to dry overnight and ironed them early this morning.
Job done. Feeling chuffed with myself.

If you go up high enough in the mountains here I Switzerland you'll find it much more bearable.
