Simply had to share the view currently from my place. No rain yet in the forecast, but who knows!

Seems like tomorrow's the "last" day of this hot summer. Damn! 20min source
16 degrees are too **** cold for August! Don't mind the rain and storms, though.
So, binge on ice cream and spend the day at the pool/lake/river tomorrow if you can. Of course this can also be done when it's only half as warm (Saturday), but it's much less fun.

Finally, thunderstorm
And there are some boats on the lake, despite lightning strikes |

Been a lovely warm day, again. But suddenly got very dark and windy, and a few rumbles of thunder- not much rain yet though.
Ooops edit 1 minute later - chucking it down now!

All hell broke lose over here!
Literally from one second to the next, we passed from 30 degrees to a huge storm. Very strong wind and heavy rain. Half my terrace went flying to the neighbors | This user would like to thank Mélusine for this useful post: | |

Collected son from Edinburgh at Geneva airport at 12.50, quickly had some nice smoked meats and melon, he almost died of the heat so changed into his swimming shorts, rushed to the lake, had an hour's swim with his sister, ice cream, glass of rosé wine...and now it's hot cups of tea and rain that, he swears, has followed him all the way from Scotland!!

I have a view of Lake Neuchatel from our house windows. There's a sailboat out in the middle with it's sail down (smartly). Then all hell broke lose and I can't see the boat anymore although I saw it 5 minutes ago. It couldn't be out of view that fast, just hope it is lost from my view in the waves and white caps.

The problem is that the Jura mountains above get cooler before the Lake area, creating a very fast and massive vacuum- virtually in minutes - causing many accidents for sailing boats, and much more for windsurfers, regularly fatal.
Normally the port authorities can see this coming and will activate flashing lights all around the lake warning sailors and surfers to get back to the shore quickly.

This phenomenon/wind is called 'Le Joran'. You are supposed to report such sightings to the emergency services so they can check the boat out.

Hotter air moves up along the slopes sucking very moist air from the lake surface behind it. When it gets high enough (and colder), the water in it condenses rapidly creating thunderstorm clouds. Additionally, process of condensation releases so called latent heat which accelerates the cloud formation process even more. This is know as an orographic cloud or storm and happens in the Alps as well (especially eastern tip of Lac Leman, in the Montreux/Aigle/Martigny region ) Additionally to this effect, a rapid downflow of cooled air along with the precipitation might occur causing substantial damages on the ground and endangering watercrafts on the lake.
