Winter tyres are not about snow. They are used below certain temperature because the material they are produced from exhibit a proper grip on the road usually below 7C. For snow you have to fit chains
interesting though that the UK, france etc gets cold but don't have winter tyres

France does, in Alpine regions. The UK? You mean cold snaps of -2C for a week and then constantly 10 degrees in the winter? :P Summer tyres do much better on wet roads while there is a risk of aquaplaning so they are good in the UK/ROI. Try to use them when it's -10C constantly for a month though. Their grip will be very weak and snow will clog the thread easily.

it's been warmer here in vaud than the UK for a while though. We had snow in the UK and never heard of people changing tyres, in mountains it's a given

we had quite a bit in 2009. last time I saw snow

I'm struggling to find somewhere to fit tyres around here before the weekend, guess I left it too late, just seems hard to imagine given I didn't even have a coat on today

Re: Weather!

It's been pretty wild all day today. Pouring rain and strong winds meant I was soaked o the skin just walking down the garden path. Even the cat refuses to go out and has resorted to using his litter tray.

Your cat is a softie Our Irish tiger was out for half a day and came back wet just to get some food. I didn't let her out second time just out of pity :P

He might be a softie but he's an intelligent softie. Only an idiot would have gone out in that if they didn't have to.
