I thought squirrels hibernated in the winter & especially didn't expect to see one running around in the SNOW WE HAD TODAY. |

They limit their outdoor activity during the strongest frost but they have to leave once in awhile and retrieve some stored food. They are communal animals and keep warm by staying close together.

I knew there will be more snow in 2016 coming because the swans in Zurich had laid down to sleep at night before Christmas |

If the swans from the second picture didn't go to bed like in the first picture, then there wouldn't have been snow fall this year, capish?

Possibly it's just that they're easier to spot against the white of the snow or they're venturing further afield looking for food, although they've usually got plenty stashed away in underground 'larders'.
We've even got a couple of black ones that I occasionally see in the garden, the various colours are just a question of pigment as all three (red, brown and black) are members of the same family; Sciurus Vulgaris. Greys are american intruders; Sciurus Carolinensis.

Looks pretty red to me!
Oh, and to keep up with the "weather" topic, here was the view in Basel a couple of days ago. Of course, it all melted off in a couple of hours, but it was pretty while it was coming down! Coco's first snow |

Perhaps we should start using the dread word 'ginger'?
A squirrel the colour shown in the picture above is described as a Red Squirrel, even when (like some of the ones in the woods around my house) they're black.... well, a very very dark brown with a reddish tinge.

Be careful out there today folks. Overnight snow here, which wasn't expected and snow plough wasn't out early. Already had an accident down the road before 6.45am. Still falling so take care!

I often see those on my route to the shops ( sometimes rather flat though ).
And to please Jakub and keep it to the weather theme there is more snow here this morning.

Once I was napping with my then-baby and had left the window open. I woke up because I felt some kind of movement - a squirrel had hopped onto my bed. I think it was a reddish one. That one I found not so cute.
Oh, and it's snowing here.

He also said that no less than 3 vehicles stuck/unable to move with cars backed up behind them between our village and the next one. Motorway was a bit better, but drivers stil going too fast for conditions and driving too close as well. Still snowing a bit here, just off to do the shovel thing.
