Re: Weather!

He just called from the hardware store in Aigle, so 1.5 hours from Morges to Aigle on the autoroute. That's bad but not too bad. He said the autoroute is moving but he never got above 50 kph.

Re: Weather!

OH nearly 45 minutes overdue assuming he left at 4 as planned. Still not yet as bad relatively as his journey home the first winter we were here. Missed getting the winter tyres on by two days so his 11km journey home from Marly took an hour and a half.

Ah, he's just come home. Took him 45 minutes to get from his office to the motorway. All safe and sound now.

Re: Weather!

They ploughed our little village road at around 5.30 and the main toads around here are all fine.
Traffic is backed up in the tunnel under Neuchatel going towards Yverdon but no idea why as we took the exit into town.

Re: Weather!

It took me 1:30 to go from Moudon and to Lutry, roughly 25km. Roads were very bad and blocked by trucks stuck sideways in the middle.

Re: Weather!

Some days ago, the Weather Channel app predicted snow on Friday; it was later revised to rain, until later this morning when snow was predicted for 3 hours. I reckon everyone underestimated the volume (we are at 420m and I reckon we had more than 6 cms of snow).

It was manic here. The bus took 30 minutes from Migros to the nearest stop (usually 5 minutes). The issue, I believe, was the absence of snow ploughs (and some vehicles' breakdown).

Re: Weather!

It has snowed up here on the Vaud side of the Jura all day and the visibility has been terrible. The snow plough has been several times but just keeps snowing.

No chance of getting out as the car has disappeared so been baking cakes & biscuits..

I think it's a case of "pays your money and takes your choice".

all my apps said rain + sleet, so expected nothing. Not sure what a strong snow storm is but it was pretty hard to see outside, and then thunder! who knew snow and thunder went together (snow virgin, forgive me for being stupid

Re: Weather!

This puny little snowfall wrecked havoc on the national roads and the motorways of the Arc Lemanique! No snowplough came out until late evening hour but by then they were stuck in huge traffic jam! There was an ice layer created from the compacted snow and the traffic was really slow! Combine this with beginning of skiing weekend rush and it takes you to drive from Geneva to Lausanne whole 2.5 hours! Ehhh where is my road tax money going to??

Re: Weather!

At this precise moment in time, I am listening to the dulcet sound of dynamite explosions being carried out to "rearrange" the mass of snow (and hopefully reduce the risk of avalanches) which has been falling for several hours on the area around my apartment. No doubt, I will be woken up around 03.30h tomorrow morning when the first snow ploughs start to clear the roads, in order that later in the day, snow enthusiasts will be able to strap planks of wood/plastic to their feet and throw themselves off the mountain slopes in their quest for pleasure! Better them than me! As I have stated more than once on this Forum, in my opinion, snow, mountains and ski-iing are grossly over-rated!

I await the arrival of Spring with great anticipation!!!

Re: Weather!

Weather forecast report from road trip whilst visiting some friends in Bern, revealed bucket loads of rain all the way from Baden. Situation on the roads today resembled a little bit like drive-thru car wash with wipers constantly in action. On the plus side though, the fuel being dirty cheap costing only CHF1.19 per litre made the whole experience less painful and more forgivable.

Trying to snow here again - not forecast so let's hope the authorities are more on the ball than they were on Friday!

Re: Weather!

Just had a fabulous ski week in the 4 Vallées, based in Thyon- great snow conditions, and sunshine all week- fresh powder overnight on Thursday- and a bit grey but good visibility on Friday. Wonderful.

Grey and dampish back in the NE Jura today.

I'm afraid Merrylegs- you certainly chose the wrong location if you are averse to snow and averse to skiing - I do wonder 'why oh why'?
