Telephone scam for oldies?

Have got used to cold call telephone marketing (sigh) and never ever buy. But today I got a call (local 022 prefix) claiming that I had responded to such a call 2 months ago and agreed to buy 12 bottles of some wine when stocks were available. Booze now available and when could they deliver?

I'm going like "Qu'est ce c'est le hell?" and the salesperson getting more and more ratty claiming that I'm going senile and forgotten my (verbal) interest. (I'm retired but still possess most of my marbles.) I ended by slamming phone down.

Now I wonder if this call had anything to do with previous calls asking if there was anyone under 60 in the house? Is there no end to this ****?

Re: Telephone scam for oldies?

FYI, and for any others receiving endless cold calls, I think a company was recently fined for cold calling people who had specifically requested no unsolicited phone calls (indicated by a * next to their number in the directory). So bear this in mind. My wife started to ask such a caller where they got our name and number etc and they quickly hung up.

Re: Telephone scam for oldies?

I got a silent call from this call-centre number last week:

0315087030 (which is an unlisted number but displays)

so I googled the number and sure enough there's plenty out there, including this recording of one of their calls (in sort of German):

It seems such calls are on an increase, despite have opted for no cold calls in the phone book. Other than telling them to f off and hanging up, I have tried to get the callers to speak English. They either say in English "I don't speak English!" to which the response is "wrong answer" and hang up.

If they do speak English, then tell them you are not interested and hang up...

My take on this is that there was no previous call, but it's just a rather nasty way of selling.

It's your home and your phone and your privilege to hang up on unsolicited phone calls...

Re: Telephone scam for oldies?

I've only been in the new house for a couple of months, so the number is new (to me) .. But straight away, around 3-4 cold calls per day.
I thought great tactic, just tell them - sorry I don't speak french, good bye.. Until the other day I got a call from a lady speaking english who said sorry our call center people don't speak english, now lets talk about insurance..

Can you come off the phone book or be blocked or something I hear? I just accepted whatever the default was at installation time.

You can request to become ex-directory (I think), or can do what I described above.
Odd you're getting cold calls already after only a couple of months though, that must suck.
I normally just put the phone down and let them babble on until they realise no-one is listening.

Re: Telephone scam for oldies?

I don't have any problems with these calls since I answer with "ma nishma?" which means "What's up" in Hebrew. You could go for "ni hao" or "Hello" in Chinese as well.

Re: Telephone scam for oldies?

I thought this thread was going to contain scams ideas. Very disappointing. I'll have to stick to my fake Billag trick.

HELLO! HELLO! YES! BILLAG! You've not paid the Billag! I will take you to prison! Yes! Billag! HELLO!!! Yes. Prison. Billag. Give me cash. CASH. Money. Yes. That 1000 CHF note is perfect. Thanks. Bye.

Ah, sorry, I appear to have cut&pasted that dierctly from the real Billag internal training course.

After we requested the * behind the number the local calls stopped, now get almost daily calls from numbers starting with +39 (Italy) instead......

I just have an answering machine. If I don't recognise the number, it goes to voice mail. If it's important, they'll leave a message.

Last time billag dropped their form in my letterbox I filled it in using the name of an ex-boss and one of the phone numbers of these people who keep cold calling me. I hope they are getting on well together.

That's actually a good point, I have never had a cold call on my mobile yet and I don't have a landline for this reason.

My favourite is to answer and then hand the phone to my 3yr old who will happily talk to anyone on the other end of the phone.

"...and then, I made a cup of tea for my toy elephant. What's your favourite colour?"
