Re: Swiss Stare

Sometimes it really irks you though, the stare thing.

One time I was on a train, this old dude staring at me the whole time. Finally I got up to go and say something and just before I get infront of him, he whacks me in the leg as he gets up, and trips me up with this white stick making me stumble and totally lose focus in quizzing him on his staring.

Starer, aggressive, and possession of a weapon.

Be safe out there guys.

I always thought it was that they can tell I'm English just by looking at me, then again, I got the same thing in Wales.

Maybe I'm just strange lookin'.
Are you suprised? The English do look a bit strange to us .

Are you a man or woman?

I think man, the answer may be below.

Because of the women's orange complex and streaks?

Or because the men still have eyebrows and do no practice so much of this?

To be fair, I do not think there is anything wrong with a bit of maintenance, especially if one truly does have fast growing, middle joining, one inch thick slugs like a lot of girls like to draw on these days (WHY????).

But, preening them to resemble a typical thin pointy female design? I have no idea what pushes straight men to this. Swiss men, do you want to give us some feedback here?

Re: Swiss Stare

Once I was on a stopped tram, staring unfocused out of the window, when I noticed that there was a man on the street staring at me, I focused and stared at him. We must of stared at each other for about a minute or two, then I giggled, he laughed, I laughed and the tram moved on.
Whilst I have tried to replicate the experience with other starers, I often find that they either turn away when I maintain eye contact, or ignore the sudden big cheesy grin and continue staring.

I think I don't understand the staring contest rules, and the first guy was fluckily also an auslander.

Re: Swiss Stare

The truth behind the Swiss Stare:

Once upon a time a swiss guy posted on an expat forum that Swiss people stare. Awareness was raised in this circle of people and everytime they thought somebody was staring at them they stared back. Nowadays about 90% of starers are misguided expats who anticipative stare back.

Re: Swiss Stare

Maybe they're just curious about other phenotypes, do it out of sheer boredom or are just looking to step on you at the first chance of weakness. Maybe a little bit of each.

That said, despite cultural differences blah blah anyone with a trained brain would avoid staring at someone as if it were something.

Seriously, though. Last week on the metro in New York I was sitting next of two SG-speaking girls (tourists?) who got the "What the f*** you lookin' at?" from a drunkish guy. Switzerland is not NYC, but still...be careful who you stare at.

Good lad. See, even if under the influence of alcohol we can educate our fellow man with manners and our repertoire of expletives. I often practice a similar thing with queue cutters.

Re: Swiss Stare

People stare here too!!! At the beginning, I thought, WTF? What is that with all Swiss people staring at me???

And then, I realized I wasn't in Switzerland anymore and people here stare too.

Shocking, right?

Dunno why but these staring threads always remind me of the brilliant banjo duel scene from the film "Deliverance".

Re: Swiss Stare

Let me try to explain...

I stare, you stare, he stares... We all stare. They stare back at us.

It is a matter of perception like beauty is in eyes of beholder. We all constitute the world of observations.

Can anyone explain to me the 'Swiss Stare'

We've encountered countless amount of people on train, walking about etc. who just seem to stare at you for, what seems like, endless amounts of time. I check to see if we've got food on our face or not wearing an item of clothing...but no. They seem to want to just stare even if you end up staring back at them.

Is it just me? Or am I going mad...

Well, the Swiss Stare is something haunting the imagination of bored usually English speaking immigrants

I never see such starers
