I know Migros meat and fish is of questionable freshness but parasitic worms dont have anything to do with freshness. The fish would have had to be infested with parasites before it was caught. The only thing to question now is how they actually screen the fish they sell. Or if they screen it at all..
Which is my point. If they sell veggies and fruits already rotten, it is maybe not a surprise to see fish with worms being sold as they lack of appropriate food control.

The presence of worms has nothing to do with freshness or quality control. They are naturally occurring and can be present occasionally despite all the checks

Yeah, I don't think I'd want the food X-rayed first. I'd rather take the (slight) risk.

Re: Worms in Migros salmon!

I saw the incriminated wild salmon on offer at Migros this morning, needless to say I passed quickly and didn't get any!

That being said, those things can happen. Yes it's gross, like when I find caterpillars on my broccoli or lice in my salad. But if you want zero risks, you eat industrial processed food... You don't know what you eat, but at least you don't see it

Re: Worms in Migros salmon!

ok - my take on this and some corrections to posts above.

Wild salmon (not farmed) can have worms in it. Doesn't matter where you get it from. It's nothing to do with the fish not being fresh or whatever.

The comment about this being a surprise because we're in Switzerland ... well, the only salmon here guaranteed to be free of worms is all that Swiss salmon you can buy. Fresh from the Swiss sea.

As for home freezing ... don't bother. I'm talking about the very quick, very cold freezing that the EU used to mandate for all salmon destined to be eaten raw*. Freezing your own fish at home is too slow. The water in the fish expands and freezes, breaking the flesh. After defrosting, the fish is a mess.

The fact the OP got live worms means the fish wasn't flash frozen. As you didn't eat the fish raw (even though your cooking didn't actually kill the worms), the worms would have been half dead and presumably safe.

* Some countries, such as the UK, no longer mandate flash freezing for farmed salmon. Wild salmon destined to be eaten raw still is. So if you want to make sushi or sashimi with wild salmon (or eat a thick piece just seared on the outsides) buy salmon marked as for sushi/sashimi. That will have been flash frozen. You may still find worms, but they'll be dead and totally harmless.

Oh, and to the person who says they like to buy it skinless - oh. When I cook salmon, the skin's the best part! I fry it (in lots of olive oil, chilli, garlic, ginger) for about 15 minutes, skin side down, never turning. Once the salmon is lightly cooked through, the skin is crispy. I love it. Tip the whole lot (including all the oil) over pasta. mmmmm.

I think I've found my new diet plan - all I have to do is read this thread each day and I won't want to eat at all!

Re: Worms in Migros salmon!

Just go to the Migros on Monday with the receipt and explain it to them. This way they can check/remove any other contaminated fish (if still fresh enough to sale). Chances are, you may not be the only person to have had the experience, so that they may reimburse you without the evidence as well.

Of course most Swiss customers will have overcooked the Salmon for safety reasons and happily eaten it

The Migros in Eaux Vives near the California fitness center.
Oh shit!!! That's the Migros I go to!! I actually walked by their fish place today and they had salmon on Action.

Gosh, I could have caused a riot if i'd known. Loads of people had salmon in their baskets.

Well, if others notice the worms they may have a riot on Monday. That should be fun.

Seriously, you should have taken it back or taken photos of it. And written to the Tribune de Genève-

I didn't buy any, by the way. To have the experience. You would have heard me screaming in Zurich!!

Eek! I would definitely let Migros customer services know, even if you haven't kept the 'evidence'. There was a similar case with Coop salmon last year, complete with pics in "20 minutes" http://www.20min.ch/ro/lecteurreporter/story/23100373 ,which certainly put me off my sashimi for a bit.
Apparently, lots of people reported worms in their fish: http://www.20min.ch/ro/lecteurreporter/story/29690079. The advice was to take it back to the shop or report it as a hygiene issue to the cantonal vet...
haha the comments on the 20min article had me crying with laughter
gross!

Re: Worms in Migros salmon!

As i have many years experience in Sushi Place, worms in salmon is very common, i can say 90% of raw fish has that , that is why when you eat sashimi and always with WASABI, wasabi can kill those worms while you are eatting raw fish, other wise you have to frozen the fish for at least over nite and that will be safe

Hi, some locals where I live (Taiwan) would say that is good as it means they didn't use too much pesticide!

I beg to differ. After living eight years in Japan (fish and other seafood on Japanese diet every day at least once) and much longer in Taiwan, after lots of sushi and sashimi without wasabi, I have to say that I never encountered a single worm.
I remember having heard/read of the danger of eating raw fish before leaving Switzerland, but there must be something wrong with the processing ... or only medium term handling is being a problem. I mean, here the fish are either caught at night and sold next day on the market, or they are frozen in factory ships for weeks before they are landed/sold. The salmon or other fish in the pacific won't be that different I assume?

Interesting fun fact: Up to about the 20th century, the Rhine in Switzerland was teeming with salmon coming back to spawn.

There were so many that Friedrich Miescher at Basel University (the actual discoverer of DNA) would pop down to the Rhine every day at dawn and scoop up dozens for his daily experiments. (History doesn't record how many of those ended up on his plate - but it's fair to say he probably got a bit sick of them).

There was a programme on BBC1 a couple of weeks ago (featuring me in it). Scientists suggested that frozen fish may be better than fresh. If frozen very soon after catching it may be in better condition than 'fresh' fish that has been around for a while.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0377vn8
Same goes for your veg

My Dad refused to eat cod as it has worms. He had a chippy for c.20 years and used to get his fish fresh from the docks, packed in ice, but not frozen. He'd fillet it all himself so would see what was in the fish, but it was only the cod he refused to eat He did all his chips from proper spuds too
