No eating in German class??

A few days ago I was told by my German teacher not to eat hot food in the class.
It stinks, and upsets the others in the class.
Fair enough, I thought- no more hot food in class.
--
So I started buying cold veggie dips and yoghurt.
My class starts at 11.15 and finishes at 13.00
My next class starts at 13.15 until 15.30
We get 10 minut breaks half way.
--
Today the girl next to me asked:
Why do I eat everyday in class? Why don't I eat at home?
I explained that I dont get enough time during the 15 mins (between 13.00 and 13.15). The co-op is just around the corner and it takes 10 mins just to go out and buy some food, depending on the queue- 15 mins.
--
The teacher came over and said .. It's ok to eat cold food in the class, but not everyday. Please eat during the breaks..
So I stopped eating the carrots.
-
At break time I walked out.
...

Thx

I'm sure you could eat something in the 15 minutes between lessons and in the 10 minute breaks.

I could easily eat enough and I'm not even American.

Re: No eating in German class??

The wonderful thing about EF is that folks come along having done the most ludicrously stupid things and, instead of learning by their mistakes and shutting up, they actually post here complaining that they are right and the rest of the world is wrong.

When does the teacher eat by the way??

Re: No eating in German class??

It's pretty normal not to allow eating in a language class. Aside from possible stinky-cheese issues, it's hard to talk with your mouth full - and hard to learn German effectively without talking.

I understand your schedule doesn't permit you to buy and eat food during the breaks - but is there a reason you can't buy food in advance (like you are doing now) and eat it during those breaks instead of during the class?

How long have you been here? I don´t want to be facetious, but you seem to be experiencing the first stages of CDS, Cultural Dissonance Syndrome. In about ten years, the symptoms subside.

Re: No eating in German class??

Ok,so you`re not joking.

Slurping thru a tub of hot food?

Crunching carrots?

In a class of students trying to pay attention to a teacher?

Hahahaaaa - very funny.

If I was the teacher I`d ask you to take your food outside to eat.

Eat before the first class. Again inbetween the classes. And again after 3pm.

Or just have a good big breakfast at 10.15? And eat again after the last class?

Re: No eating in German class??

Um, I worked as an English teacher and often had barely 15 minutes between classes, but you didn't catch me munching away on my egg mayo sandwich in the middle of a lesson.

In fact, most of my classes were over the lunch hour, say from 11.30-13.30 or 12-2, and if I really couldn't wait til after the lesson, I would munch on something in the obligatory ten minute break they had halfway through the lesson to keep me going. Where there's a will, there's a way...

Eating during class is distracting and pretty disrespectful to the other class members.

I agree with the teacher in this situation.

Ok, I'm a slow eater..
I have never enjoyed stuffing my mouth in 5 or 10 mins.
But I find eating is a pre-requisite for learning.
Ludicrously strange and stupid I admit.

Re: No eating in German class??

I had a very similar experience lately!

I went to the physician and as he was examining me I was trying to eat a Burrito, but he objected! I tried to explain that this was my lunch break, but he was not having it and mumbled something about "better planning" while he continued to fumble in openings.

And don't get me started on trying to brush ones teeth at the local post office!

Switzerland, eh?!
