Re: Coriander Ruins My Life!

Is low salt available here?

I always bring some back from the UK but would rather buy it here if I can.

One of the big advantages of own home cooking. We use low-salt.

Not a problem when we were younger, now we keep a watch.

I recall once a few years back eating hot food at the self-service at the Co-op; that afternoon we both had uncomfortable reactions to the over saltiness of that food.

Prefer by traveling to take own sandwich, a banana, unless have cooked something else suitable, as so often if one eats at somewhere unknown and on the way, quiet often the hot food over salted, as a way of preserving

I have seen umpteen times people leaving aside the herbs which are part of the food here. I believe this herbs gives not only aroma to the food but serve great value to our health when eaten together (or after) with that food.
the HERBS (Kräuter) of course are of vital importance. "Kräuterfrauen" (ladies of herbs) like my great-grand-mum on the mother side, had a role deep into the 20th Century. Yes, herbs, used in daily food, are excellent for your health

@Wollishofener - I would love to learn more about Kräuterfrauen if you have any info or resources you could point me at--therapeutic herbalism & folk medicine are subjects that have interested me for years.

LOL! That's a Mint Julep (Kentucky Bourbon with large sprig of mint leaves)--the classic drink at the Kentucky Derby in the US. Personally I think bourbon is nauseating and even mint can't help it, but don't tell my ex-mother-in-law (born & raised in Louisville) with her 30-year collection of etched commemorative julep glasses...

Interesting!
Even Jamie's doing it;
http://hotcooking.co.uk/recipes/70/j...een-tea-salmon

but unfortunately his recipe has the dreaded coriander in it!
I'd just leave it out, maybe using flat leaf parsley for the look of things instead.....

Coriander is lovely mate - get over it.

Celery however - is a vile and horrible vegetable that should be perm banned. I bloody hate it when they put celery in the salads in our cantina!

Re: Coriander Ruins My Life!

I suggest you stay away from Indian food then, because its used as a fresh form as well as in the powdered form.

I love it...plus its got health benefits.

No coriander is not lovely..... at least not to some of us!
Be fair, you're not going to be ragged for hating celery.

AGAIN, powdered coriander is not the same thing as fresh coriander; it's the ground seeds of the same plant, but has a completely different taste.

..

THIS http://www.kraeuterfrauen.com/

gives a bit of the idea. But while the ones portrayed here (in the Toggenburg valley) are organised and have their gardens, the REAL Kräuterfrauen in the past during the day went through forests and accross valleys and hills and collected what nature offered. They knew for what which product could be used. They did not have shops but were asked by neighbours and family members about advice and stuff

Grandmum had learnt a lot from her mother, and so when we were bitten by an insect, she went with us to the forest, looked round and massaged some stuff into our skin. When somebody had a cold or the flu, she mixed a strange and horrible but effective herbal tea. Mum as girl and young woman had avoided this stuff at almost any price, but sometimes had to go through. It worked within less than two days.

In case of Great-GrandMum, it was free for the neighbours and family members, but she of course expected some gifts (cider, beer, wine etc)

Patsycat, ages ago when we all were still young and beautiful, bought some salmon at Migros which was horribly spoilt.

By worms the size of rattle-snakes etc

I never ate onions until a doctor who treated me in regard to lymphoedema ( Lymphödem) told me that I had three ways available
> eat lots of onions
> eat a lot of garlic
> start getting used to a wheelchair
I chose the onions and at the start found it bad. but then gradually learnt how to use the stuff, and now, onions are something I purchase daily and enjoy

It doesn't work with fresh coriander. It is not like I decided I don't like it...it looks nice, but the taste and even smell is...lets just say that for me it is a physical reaction... I am not fond of lemongrass either.

When I cook recipes with coriander as one of the ingredients I simply replace it with something else, if I think it would fit there..usually parsley.
