If you get the bus into Geneva town centre there are plenty of shops, like Manor, coop, Migro.

Like post 5 on the thread.

She reacted badly to your post and quite rightly so, she might have stepped off the plane that day and had no idea where to go, maybe she had never posted on a forum before.

There is a really, really simple newer to this. Don't!
Our post crossed in the ether.

Are you really taking that question seriously? To me that was a troll and got what it deserved. It had no manners either. You just don't join a community and demand an answer to a random question without even saying hello, sorry.

Re: The Treatment of New Posters

Well I'm new on this site really, and it does have the sense of a community that's next to impossible to get into, but I have received some help when I have asked

But, correct me if I'm wrong but there's no obligation to reply to a post, right? So no one has to keep typing things out over and over.

And sometimes questions are genuine, even if they seem obvious.... I've not been here long and literally cannot find a bath/shower sponge anywhere (and nor can friends in Zurich)... now, I probably would't actually post a question on here about it, but it doesn't mean that I'm stupid because I cannot locate the store I need.

So how do you answer a question from Geneva, "Where can I buy bath towels?" help [Where to buy Bath Towels - GE]

Maybe it's seen as arrogant behaviour by me, but people have to learn to help themselves in this world, and I am not prepared to spend hours typing the same stuff out, over and over again.
Would wholeheartedly agree. Some people derive their "knowledge" exclusively online today.
Where is that very rare and shy animal - common sense??

Re: The Treatment of New Posters

I used to be part of an English forum in Turkey and it was so much worst than here. Full of arrogant Brits with the same attitude in real life. This forum and it's people is a walk in the park compared to the other one.

I found it though here for a while but when I got the grip on the British sense of humor, I found myself giving as much as I received.

I am glad I sticked around. Now, most of my best buddies in Ch are British and I am looking forward to go back mostly because of them and all the others as well

Of course that doesn't make you stupid, but would you join a group of strangers and demand to be told where to buy a sponge?

I'd like to think you'd start by saying, hello, I'm new here and I don't know where to find so and so, can anyone help?

It's just MANNERS!!!

If that was the first reply, who knows she might have been someone that came back and added value to the forum. She could have been a head hunter, someone in insurance or tax etc etc, someone that can give info back into the forum.
Sorry, but I can't see you getting out of your way to reply to their questions either.

You do like to complain about the ones who do, though

If you think it was a troll then there is also an easy answer to that.

Don't feed the trolls.

They will either go away or be found out and banned.

And it looks as though this was not a troll as they never continued the 'trolling'.

Re: The Treatment of New Posters

While I can understand people being frustrated at simple questions that they perceive to be lazy, the best advice is simply to ignore them. For example, so many people got annoyed about the towel thread, but I was even more baffled by the warm response to the poster who was looking for make up remover for his friend - which I found to be even more inane (sorry if you're reading!) - I felt like writing something sarcastic, but then I just trained myself not to read that thread.

I have to say that sometimes the simplest things can be very confusing when you first arrive. I remember I was driven mad by little things like how to find a facecloth (that wasn't a glove-type thing), where to find Cheddar, cotton fitted sheets. So many things were not to be found where I expected them to be.

I think it's definitely true that people don't act the same here as they would in 'real life'. Bullying is usually something that people grow out of, but online it happens all the time.

I have had some really great help on this site, and I try to reciprocate. I like to think that I behave here as I would in real life! On the other hand, it can sometimes be fun to read some sarcastic posts etc, but we should just try not to be too horrible!

Re: The Treatment of New Posters

Actually a good exercise for the barflies of this forum is:

- read your first posts to check how "stupid" or "arrogant" your questions were.

- find how you've been received as well with sarcasms or irony by at that time longterm members

Re: The Treatment of New Posters

The solution is simple. In the first e-mail sent to all newbies we should ask them to prefix all their first 10 posts with the phrase
"I am not a stupid annoying troll, but I cannot... "

Maybe I am stupid and trust people too much? Where in the examples above is the difference between trolling, stupidity & rudeness?

"Where can I buy a towel" can be any of these. How do I recognize the difference? Do I ignore, be sarcastic, or be rude?

Maybe this person wanted to know where to go to get good quality towels but at a good price as they can get pretty pricey. The ones from the supermarkets don't seem to absorb very much. Personally I wait for the sales at upper scale stores so the price is like buying a cheap one that's not on sale.....just saying.
