Absolutely. And I think confloozed may have confused honesty and total lack of tact, although I do prefer people to be honest and try to be so myself, there are times where "not saying something" is more helpful than "shoving the truth down people's throat". "Not saying something" is not the same as being two-faced and I learned the hard way that a word spoken without thinking has the potential to really hurt others and destroy friendships. I think it is delusional to go through life thinking that "true friends accept all I have to say" because, let's be honest, not all our thoughts are fit for human consumption.

As for the Maurer comment, I think it was idiotic, but the reaction of certain feminists is just as embarrassing. If an idiot says something stupid, I merely see it as proof of my estimation of that idiot. So it doesn't really matter.

On the other hand, Roland Müller, head of the association of employers just took a huge dump on women as a whole, declaring that salary inequality was simply down to women's "personal attitude", which apparently prevents them from working as hard as men. More specifically, their view that working hours should be regular means that they put in less time overall and those pesky pregnancies means women should really be grateful that they get hired at all. Now THAT I cannot accept, as it affects me in real terms, this general suspicion that I will get pregnant and ruin it for everyone and not getting paid the same as my colleague because I have to pick my (hypothetical) child up from daycare by six.

How many marriages would still function if both partners decide that career > private life? Who is supposed to have kids if women should not get pregnant and take time off to rear children? Is it worth taking the gamble of not working and hoping that your partner will indeed provide for you until your children are in their teens and then that you will find a job again? I know too many single mams to consider this a worthwhile gamble.
> honesty and Ueli Maurer ? is a an oxymoron. I always admired him in a way even when I was absolutely against his positions, as a superior political tactician and strategist

> tact never was his forte, but quiet diplomacy always was and is

> "idiotic " -- not at all. He forced the SVP hardliners to support him and to back him --- not an idiot but a genius

and if you speak of women I still remember Mum who always spoke about Ueli Maurer as " that chap with the mouth of a frog "

The fact that a guy like this is in our government makes me ashamed to be Swiss

This remark of his is only one of numerous examples of his whole inadequacy.
What bothers me more, is that kind of remark is actually going to make himespc more and not less electable for many...

may have been a 'joke'- but as said, he should know what is appropriate in a public interview and a private context.

This little snarky comment of his is totally something I could have heard from someone the generation of my parents or older. I don't find it funny, but in a private context I couldn't care less.

What makes me hate the guy is his way of dealing with the whole Gripen affair: his arguments, his way of dealing with the press, etc. I find his political attitude deeply lacking.

Re: Such idiots in Swiss politics-Ueli Maurer

Well I suppose I am your parents' generation (as I have daughters aged 41 and 39)... but this does not help me think such stupid comments, especially in an interview, are acceptable. The sort of joke OH might have made with his mates whilst drinking a couple of pints with his squash club mates, tongue and cheek- thei jokes were defo non PC often- but I knew them well enough to know they didn't mean it, and that they would have the common sense to know they would not be acceptable in a wider audience - anyone with any common sense and intelligence would have worked that one out, surely.

As said, the tragic point is not the 'joke' itself, but that, according to discussions I've had in past few days with some of the local older men at meetings- would actually encourage them to vote for him- rather than be put off by it- and that is scarry

Oh, I totally agree that his comment was not at all suitable for a public audience! What I meant is that this was simply not the worse of his sins...

And I actually agree with you: the older generation, which is the main part of his electorate, probably found it funny and harmless and are even put off by the scandal around it

And here are today's politically correct rules valid until midnight, May 01, 2014:

Swiss politicians: Be ultra conservative, do not even pretend to smile.

Rap artists: Please try to be as derogatory about women as possible. Slap them bitches good. Shake that bling.

Ex-Nazi part leaders ending up underground in Berlin: Shout a lot and stay single mindedly racist and extreme about everything.

EF posters: Be holier than thou, whiter than an angel's tampon mid-cycle.

Re: Such idiots in Swiss politics-Ueli Maurer

he should have thought more before speaking because it's a politically dangerous joke and it has a demeaning message to it, but it was a joke and not an especially offensive one. It's being exploited politically.
Anyway since I also read about italian politics, I can tell you that this is nothing in comparison to what happens south of the border.

He DOES know what is appropriate. He placed his "joke" in full consideration of all aspects in question. YES, he won again. And he again used what is called "a well calculated insult"

He killed two flies. He on one side forced the SVP hardliners to back him, and showed himself as a "man of the people"

When starting to read your comments, after the first few lines, I realized that I am getting old, as many of my friends speak the same stupid rubbish, in spite of being "modern" people otherwise.

Far worse however is that some of those who oppose Maurer&Blattmann NOW may ask you to support this or that military equipment later on. The "Rundschau" chap is one of that sort. Who think that they now defeat the M&B team and then still can continue on the old pattern

Now I understand. THAT's the reason why polling stations are so difficult to reach on polling days: because of all those wheelchairs, stretchers etc..

Ueli should never have put himself in such a position. However, despite the cringe-worthy interview, I'd still rather have Ueli than Donald as president.

Ueli Maurer: "Nöffing tu sei"

Translate: Nothing to say

In the guest book he even uses the slogan of the Swiss defense company Ruag": "Together ahead". Its clear where his priorities are.
