Such idiots in Swiss politics-Ueli Maurer

In a meeting today he asked how many commodites one has at home.He answered the question himself - "By us not many . Of course the wife, who does the housework! "
These Swiss politicians are just so out of touch with reality.

What's wrong with that? Not everyone is living in some kind of post-modern society where women can't do the housework......alot of couple are fine with the woman doing the housework, and the man does other things, such as earning money!

Re: Such idiots in Swiss politics-Ueli Maurer

He said it slightly differently, the question was somewhere along the lines (not a literal translation) of "How many 30-year old appliances do you still have at home" - his answer: "Not many except the wife". This was during a discussion about his stupid Gripen (fighter jets) as the ones Switzerland currently has are 30 years old and he wants them replaced for some x billion $ (hence the vote in a few weeks) - so he wanted to compare the old jets with old appliances at home or in his case, his wife.

Hardiharhar. Of course this is clearly disrespectful and an unacceptable thing to say for a politician. It's not about whether a woman stays home as a housewife or not, but about claiming a woman is a 30-year old appliance.

Given Ueli is a conservative jerk anyway, I won't even bother getting POed at this, though. Some things are just not worth my time.

Unacceptable? Really? It just seems a bit of light banter to me. Perhaps just not as literal as the typical Germanic reply, I guess (well, my mangle is 27.3 years old, and my refridgerator is only 2 yars old, but it is a quality Swiss brand and I expect it to last....)

Re: Such idiots in Swiss politics-Ueli Maurer

OK, I'll go with "inappropriate"

He can say stupid things all he wants when he's sitting at the Stammtisch with his SVP buddies, but there's certain things you don't say in public. This is one of them, imo.

The fact that a guy like this is in our government makes me ashamed to be Swiss

This remark of his is only one of numerous examples of his whole inadequacy.

True. My all-time favorites are "women and the environment only cause costs", "working mothers are the demise of our society" and, on global warming, "people like it if it's a little warmer"

Ah yes, good old Ueli. Always a pleasure.

Maybe it was just a little banter *just kidding*

I'm sure this would call for some interesting research: stupidest things politicians have ever said. Even though I have a feeling I know who would top the list and it's not Ueli

Re: Such idiots in Swiss politics-Ueli Maurer

A hint for his wife to an upcoming newer, more Swedish model of Miss Maurer?

Trivia: Ueli met his wife in Seattle (HQ Boeing, now manufacturer of F/A-18)

Adolf Hitler was a politician, do you think it would be un acceptable for him to make the same remark? Politicians speak to their base to get elected, not be correct.

Re: Such idiots in Swiss politics-Ueli Maurer

Speaking in a PC manner was the least of all problems with Hitler.

But yes, I expect from politicians to be politically correct (ha, wordplay). That includes to refrain from discriminatory statements or "jokes" in public. This has nothing to do with trying to find a base to be elected. For that, they have their different opinions and viewpoints which they can voice in a proper and respectful way.

As little as I'd accept for any politician to say that all foreigners are freeloading idiots, I'd accept them to compare their wife to a kitchen appliance or say that a group of women are sluts.

I'm all for a bit of sarcasm - but in this position and in public, no, this is just not appropriate. Once can maybe be ignored, twice maybe too, when it starts to become a pattern - and it almost always does with a certain kind of politician - it's a different issue.

Again, I don't care what they do in their free time. We all have our opinions and not all of them are always voiced in a respectful way. But in public? Whole different story. If you want a Stammtisch-level discussion, go to the Stammtisch, but don't become a politician (or anything else that requires you to speak in public)

Well I can think of a whole slew of politicians from around the globe that make non "pc" remarks. In public....you just said it is OK to talk Sh*t behind people's backs or in private, but not in public. That makes no sense.
Whether one agrees with the statement made or not, what defines a politician, is one who represents a group of people, publicly. If that group of a people, say, are for donkeys running the country with a slight hatred for the Jewish population, how else do they represent their base other then slighting Jews and talking about the greatness of donkeys?

I think it is fair to say you disagree with his comments. But saying a politician can't be political doesn't make sense.

Who knows how his wife feels about what was said. Does it matter? If a woman had said it, you would have a laugh, and talk about how far we have come ( I am only assuming). I personally do more then my fare share of the household chores when I am working less then my partner. How would that be inappropriate if she said that?

Publicly?

Whatever. He made a joke, it was mildly amusing to some and offensive to others as most humor is. Hardly worth talking about unless you've got a pretty thin skin - I've certainly said worse in public, and managed to avoid getting hanged.
