Get your bag off my seat

Dear fellow commuter: you see that the train is full and no seats are available. Why do I have to ask you to move your bag?

You don't ask but simply sit on said bag.

Because I hope you won't sit next to me and choose someone else instead as long as my bag is on the sit.
I once noticed a guy traveling from Zug to Zurich who pretended he is waiting for someone. He had a backpack on the sit next to him and was looking for his imaginative friend when the crowd started entering the train. I knew something was strange there but couldn't say what. Once the door closed and our train started moving nobody sat next to him. He cheated all of us to sit alone. Crazy bastard. Next time I see him I will just sit next to him without asking for permission and involve him in a lovely long and intensive conversation.

Re: Get your bag off my seat

You need to think like a Swiss:

Guy putting bag on seat: "hey, if I don't try to get people to sit down somewhere else first by putting my bag on the seat next to me, it's my own fault if I get a stinky neighbour".

Guy wanting seat: "hey, if I don't ask this guy to move his bag, it's my own fault if I have to stand".

Very straight forward actually. Not necessarily what we are used to in the rest of the world but perfectly logical behaviour to a Swiss.

It's called public transport for a reason.
Anyone can sit next to you. Want to sit alone? Get on your bike.

Bags on free seats

Pregnant lady, you can have my seat but your shopping can't

One transit ticket entitles you to how many seats?

You are not alone

You don't have to ask, you simply point at it and look in the direction of the owner after standing by the seat and waiting a second or two. The owner will, without a word, remove the offending article.

Because I was hoping a pretty lady would come along and I'd move it for her without being asked - you're just spoiling my chances of getting a better seat partner for the journey (unless you are a pretty lady, of course, in which case insert gender/orientation of preference).

Re: Get your bag off my seat

Oooooh one of my favorite topics...

Of course they could take it away but they are ignorant, mostly young girls or businessmen who don't have a bloody clue about public transport.

so you just have to put up with asking them to take the bag away.

it's one of my hobbies to pick the most ignorant, annoying seatblocking person to then nearly sit on the persons bag and then moving around next to the person for the whole ride...

Re: Get your bag off my seat

Normally I move my bag, pat the seat next to me and say to the person with my best smile, "sit yourself down there my love".

They always move down the corridor for some reason.

Cheers,
Nick

This is the best solution. Hover your bum momentarily over the offending bag / jacket / terrier, whilst looking a bit distracted, and see how quickly they pull it out from under you, allowing you to sit down

Is this supposed to be a first world problem thread? I just assume people do so on public transport to get their own private space (privacy in public space? I know this sounds to be a paradox). Where I come from, people would be very happy to share their seats, even manage 2 seats for 4 persons, and share some stories along the ride.

Re: Get your bag off my seat

I may be mistaken, but vaguely remember reading that the ticket controllers can issue a fine to someone who hasn't bought a ticket for the seat their bag is occupying?

My dream assignment for a design/engineering class would be to design a train carriage that maximized seating in some sort of configuration that allowed as many passengers to sit "alone" as possible. There could be some carriages with conventional 2x2 seating. Any creative thinkers into public transport out there?

I'm guilty of the "I want to sit alone" thing too, but I just stand or sit on the steps. On the packed UK trains I take the luggage rack or floor space by the doors if free

Re: Get your bag off my seat

you get some weird looks here when you ask them to take their bags
so you can seat ... its not like you ask money or something .
But overall no need to complain , people are very polite here.

In my book, that is the worst sin on the trains.

All the weirdos who sit on the steps (when there are seats available) and never move when you ask them and it's impossible to get past them with heavy luggage without performing some contortion which screws up your back.

Or, when with your young kids, the kids end up falling down the stairs as you can't hold their hands, or the handrail because of the weirdo on the stairs.
