Have you done this, though?

Flying London-Zurich-Basel would work if you left the flight at the Zurich stopover, provided you told them to take off your bags (or just had cabin baggage) but the return flight to London wouldn't work because you'd have to check in at Basel airport, i.e. you can't join the flight at the Zurich stopover.

How is it possible that tickets from Zurich are so expensive on SWISS vs bbooking the same flight from Milan, which then includes a short duration local flight from Milan to Zurich and connecting to the same flight (LX 146).

They only are if you are so stupid as to fly business class.

On short haul flights I also don't really see the point of business class. But on long ones boy, those beds!...

This happens not only for Zurich sadly it also happens for some city of the US like Atlanta. Was going to Atlanta from Zurich a couple years back and my flight straight to Atlanta was expensive. So I try to just look around and found out that if I take the exact same flight to Atlanta plus another flight from Atlanta to Miami is way cheaper than the direct flight to Atlanta . So I took the flight to Miami via Atlanta, spend a little holiday there, then take a local flight from Miami to Atlanta. Still cheaper than the initial direct flight :msncool:

In this particular case, the Zurich-Basel leg is by train.

They're talking about where the BSL-ZRH section is by train. That'd work OK.

errr no as the basel zurich or zurich basel section is by train and doesnt involve a baggage check in unless you wish to pay extra for the privilege at basel sbb.

P.S. I travelled for two weeks in japan with hand baggage only. It cost me half an hour extra questions by the custom police, but that's another story.

I would not want to travel with you ;)

You would still probably have problems. The crew would have to check that you didn't have checked baggage…. that info is with the ground staff in Delhi. Then the paperwork would all have to be changed. It might sound easy, but trust me it's a headache, and the ground staff would likely just say no!

Actually, no, I've done it a few times, check-in for one leg only and then discarding the final leg. Just told the checkin agent that I would be taking my bag out in ZRH, or SIN or KUL whatever, and all ok. I traveled around a lot for work and sometimes buy combinations of one way or return tickets, and when plans change sometimes it is cheaper to buy new tickets than changing or canceling old ones.

But once you miss one leg of the journey, your while ticket gets cancelled.

On long haul… I'd take business every time if I could afford it!

Yes, but not in Swiss business unless all the other options were sold out. It's wildly over-rated.

yeah on long-haul I agree, but short-haul? It's not even "real" business class on short-haul and even if it were, it's hardly worth paying some 2000€ for a 1-hr flight? Seriously, even if I had three times as much money as I do now, I don't think I would pay that.

I'd love to travel on business in overnight flights, those lie-flat beds do look comfy (only applies to certain airlines).
It's totally not worth it on flights during the day though.
