Swiss airways rip-off

How is it possible that tickets from Zurich are so expensive on SWISS vs booking the same flight from Milan, which then includes a short duration local flight from Milan to Zurich and connecting to the same flight (LX 146).

Tell me about it !

Cairo-Zurich-Geneva-Zurich-Cairo is cheaper than just Cairo-Zurich-Cairo.

And Cairo-Zurich-London-Zurich-Cairo is even cheaper. Even though the flight distance and times are longer.

And cheaper still, even though it is further away, is Cairo-Zurich-Barcelona-Zurich-Cairo !!!

And all of the above is based on flying only with Swiss !!!

It's crazy !!!

If flying from London to Zürich w/Swiss, compare the fare to Basel, via Zürich. It is quite often significantly less and one can just skip the included train transfer either direction. Its the markets, not the distances:rolleyes:

It's not only Swiss - most airlines use a similar commercial calculation.

The most convenient (here direct flight) = the most expensive.

If you look the starting price from MXP and from ZRH in Business, it's quite close.

I know that with-in the travel classes, airlines have different fares of ticket. Some some business class fares are more expensive than others on the same flight.

It could be that they have so many of the lower fares reserved for passengers just booking the Zürich flight (and those have sold out) and they still have some left for connecting passengers. Airline ticketing is a mystery.

What you can't do is book from Milan, and get on in Zürich!

But, you can do it the other way around, get off in Zürich, provided you only have hand luggage :p

Not many people travel to India with only hand luggage!

You would still probably have problems. The crew would have to check that you didn't have checked baggage…. that info is with the ground staff in Delhi. Then the paperwork would all have to be changed. It might sound easy, but trust me it's a headache, and the ground staff would likely just say no!

Swiss air can still afford such behaviors because there is almost no easy jet and others low cost in ZH/CH but one day...

Are you for or against free market economy?

P.S. I travelled for two weeks in japan with hand baggage only. It cost me half an hour extra questions by the custom police, but that's another story.

Higher costs for flying out of Zurich is a pure reflection of market conditions. Calling it a swiss rip is evidence of not understating how the market works

I am flying from LHR to Zh on Swiss tomorrow as I need to be in Zurich tomorrow night , I could be in geneva for half price on Monday or a quarter price on Tuesday but then I loose 2 days pay so Swiss is the cheapest & I don't have a 3 hour train journey :D

I've usually found the best value on Swiss by the time I factor in time traveling to/from airport (Zürich vs Geneva/Basel) and most frequent destination London (prefer City) BUT compared to many other airlines (national-flag-carrier types or budget) what drives me :msnmad: with Swiss is not being able to book decently priced one-way fares.

Flying Zürich-Oslo I can book o/w at a price affordable for a mortal on SAS (even if it turns out to be a codeshare flight) SAS does not fly Zürich-London so the only reasonable options for o/w are BA or EJet.

When I was first in CH 20 years ago I paid 500-800 CHF to fly ZH to London on Friday night returning on Sunday night. It's cheaper today .......

Too true! I don't know why Swiss have such high one way fares!

Simple answer! Becasue they want you to book a return, chances are a return ticket is cheaper which is a age old bisoness model

As this hasn't been discussed before and the comment hasn't been made before, I won't make it again.

Airlines will try to steal other airlines from their hubs by offering cheap through flights. IE Stealing KLM customers from Amsterdam, AF from Paris, BA from LHR, LH from MUN or FRA, Alitalia from Milan etc etc.

It is nothing new

(IIRC transferring passengers have lower tax costs too)

Well I don't book a return…. I fly with someone else!

Zurich -> Toronto -> Zurich can cost up to 40% more than Zurich -> Toronto -> Chicago -> Traverse City, MI -> Chicago -> Toronto -> Zurich, no matter what airline. And, as alluded by others, don't think it's easy to book the whole long trip if you just want to go to Toronto. You'll be in serious troubles when you show up in Toronto for your flight back.

If I remember that right, a few years ago a lady sued Swiss International Airlines. She had booked Zurich -> Paris -> Zurich, but for some reason she couldn't make it to the first flight. A few days later she traveled to Paris by train. At the end of her stay, as she checked in for the flight home, she was confronted with the bill for the higher cost of the one-way trip and not allowed to board the plane without immediate payment.

She won the case, and she got reimbursed, but the spokesperson for Swiss said that, although the airline would not appeal, they would stick to that practice in all other cases, just as any other airline.

Wrong answer. It's because they assume those booking singles are business travellers who will pay whatever it takes. Used to be universal, there's not many that still do it now.

In most cases when you use a restricted ticket and miss the first leg of it the whole ticket becomes invalid, so the airline will charge you the difference to an unristrickted ticket
