In 2011 there was a Coop scandal around expired meat. Several butchers of Coop did put a new date on expired meat and sold it. It was pretty huge coverage in press and Coop fired more than 50 employees.
I think yogurt is not a big deal...just a mistake. The expiry date includes a pretty good error margin. I ingested yogurt which was past 10days expiry date and had no problem.
As everyone already said...go to customer service of the branch and they will refund you with apologies.
Yogurt is different from a lot of other food products in that, the living bacteria in it, is actually very old itself, and the only way to make yogurt is to transplant bacteria from old yogurt into new milk. If you don't have fruit mixed in, that can go bad, it often times is fine to eat yogurt up to a month later.

The expiry date is there on that particular product when it is, because the nutritional value listed on the ingrediants page, will start to diminish, and it no longer will be true.

A lot of food is like this. You need yeast to continuously grow if you want to make a proper mother for baking bread. I know a bakery in San Francisco that sell their bread all over the country(it arrives frozen though), and the mother they used was imported from France in the 1960's. Hence it is a generation of bacteria that is almost 60 years old.

What you should find most interesting is the yogurt drink Actimel, and other forms of this kind of drink. It is bacteria based as well, and helps contribute more "good" stomach bacteria for better digestion and regular bowel movement. Do you know where that bacteria originally comes from? An American male donor, of bacteria originating in his stomach lining, extracted from his feces, and I can't remember the process, but when they put it into a canister and spin it, and the pieces separate.

So, while you are worrying if your Actimel has passed the expiration date of the continually living bacteria that originates from feces, just think, about the big picture.

The majority of people are blaming the OP, but doesn't the shop have the responsibility of selling food that is not out of date?
It may still be perfectly ok to eat, but the dates are there for a reason. It is past its date, it should not be on the shelf.
If we buy something which is still before its use by date and then eat it after the date, that is up to us, but the shop should not be selling food which has expired.
Things were much simpler when you bought something and if it wasn't mouldy or stinky you would eat it.
I am sure it was a mistake, this thing is not happening on a regular basis here. Even so, I always check the expiry date in the shop.
Anyway, to start a whole thread on EF because of some yogurts, instead of taking them back to Coop?
Sometimes I wonder where some people come from...or where did they live before, Disneyland?

Well most cheese comes from rennet, which is mostly not vegetarian. In other words it originally comes from the stomach lining of goats.

Back in the day, humans used to use goats stomachs as a way to hold and transport milk and water. As with lots of food and medicines, accidental discovery, when milk sat in there long enough, it began to curdle, and hence eventually cheese was born.

Have you ever been to a vineyard's fermenting room where the first of the smashed grapes go to become wine? It's a bubbling nasty mess, and is in making any kind of alcohol that came from fruit or vegetables.

Oh I don't care about any of that. I used to love a nice bit of tripe when I was a kid. Anyway last time I looked a goat's stomach didn't contain faeces.

It's actually the 'healthy bacteria' is good for you let's sell these yoghurts at vastly inflated prices bollocks that I don't buy into.

Every time my gaze goes past this thread, I wonder at the wording of the title. As if there wasn't any choice to buy it.

Amusing is all.

Yogurt, bread, kambucha - all things with healthy bacterias you don't necessarily want to think too hard about.

Re: Coop sold me expired food

By Lake Tresimano in Italy, we were chatting with sil and bil who were on holiday with us. Students were sitting at the next table revising for exams. One of them approached us and very politely asked if we could help with his marketing exam and we of course agreed. He asked what 'past its sell by date' meant- so we laughed and told him- just look at us- this is exactly what we are. Seeing we were laughing about it- he laughed too and tried to deny the truth- but we knew better. We did explain it didn't mean we were ready to be thrown away and still very much in good order, but not as good as we were before, and that was fine by us.

I taught my kids to check food like this: look, smell taste, in that particular order. It looks bad or mouldy? Throw it away. It looks good but smells bad, dito. It looks good, smells good but tastes bad....... you get the picture. It is all about using common sense which is something that many people seem to be not able to.

And talking about using your senses: use your eyes BEFORE you buy.

If it looks dry, yellowing, cracked or has an amoniac smell, bin it.

The same goes if some shop has poured Port into it.

Just following on from Mc.G-D's advice to her children.
Good, 'normal' ripe-ish Stilton might look and smell a bit dodgy to a child, before they even taste it.

Which is why I prefer the German "mindestens haltbar bis". It actually means "keepable until at least" which psychologically means you can eat it after the so called expiry date - the wording implies some leeway. Whereas the English version is "best before" meaning that people will think it's crap and throw it out.
