I don't think it's always pretentious, could be a mere brainfart, maybe it's different between En and Ge, since both languages are so close. So, didn't you Google for EF pet hates? Why should we do the searching for you?

How dare you take up the time of us Forum veterans with your silly post asking questions?

And if you complain about us being unhelpful we'll groan and bad rep you!

Cheers,

It's actually well-documented as being pretentious - there's even a few You-tube clips of comedy sketches specifically about this.

My pet peeve is that quite often, people do reply to these threads with out-of-date, inaccurate or just plain wrong information so even if you search, you'll probably get incorrect info anyway and when a thread is several pages long, finding the correct answer among the fluff is almost impossible.

Most of the information on EF is not correct. That's not a pet peeve. That's just a fact.

;)

I can imagine, there always will be show offs. I know those who mix sans wanting to (I do because it makes me laugh). Open The New Yorker and count the intellectually tagged French words that did not have to be there at all. Who cares, though, if one wants to write like that...idiolects are a matter of private choice. I don't really keep phoneys around enough to be peeved, me thinks. I miss home words but can't insert them anywhere without sounding really off. Blb. Skrz. (we have words without vowels, or make guttural noises that to other language groups sound odd). Řidič..Wish there was somebody polluting his/her posts with some home words. :(

But some is fantastically correct. You just need to get to know which posters don't post drivel.
(They're usually the ones who send you expletive-filled messages when you point out the error of their ways. Hard cheese, I say!)

I have visual and esthetic problem with text speak and all sort of acronyms used in sentences. I cannot put my finger on it (maybe I should consult my shrink) but it really evokes terrible feelings when I see something like: AFAIK, HTFU, LMGTFY, IMHO and etc. Anyone who uses them, sounds like a nerd or even git to me.

I try to make my posted replies as helpful as possible. The problem is when I translate the Swiss terminology it sometimes has no relevance. If I keep the Swiss noun then the OP knows exactly what I am talking about.

An "Einschreibung" can be translated as a recorded delivery or a registered letter. If I use the word "Einschreiben" then the OP has learnt a new word, and knows it is the correct word to use at the Post Office. "Recorded delivery" might be translated as "aufgezeichnet Lieferung" when the correct term to use is "Einschreiben or Einschreibung" Similarly a "Registered letter" can be translated as "eingetragen Schreiben" and mistakenly not Einschreiben.

We should all know the perils of translating, which is why I try to use original German and French words. It isn't showing off - that would be silly. any fool can use a dictionary, it's choosing the right word that needs the experience.

I have a problem with posts along the line of "I went to [rural village] and talked to [delivery guy| waitress| random blue collar worker] - they did not understand a word of English! Don't they know it's the world language?!". Worst examples are the demanding ones like "I want to talk to xyz office of the government. Why do I need to bring a translator? I pay taxes!"

Hahah...and the pretence of making fun of oneself, but the royal egos are hard to hide. I find it mostly humorous, wish it was a bit more dry and dark, like at home. It's an art to be intelligently funny but not a jerk. Brit politeness is sweet, though.

What's not so interesting is that it's expected to be admired and liked. Colonialists.

And the overuse of insincere euphemisms, so old. It's gymbalz annoying.

My pet hate is that sometimes I read posts by different members and they are basically saying the same thing but do not bother to read the previous posts.

Ah yes, the groans... Honestly, I don't understand the concept :o (and I never groan at anyone). Why groan at people if they just have a different opinion than yourself?

I understand it even less if it's just a drive-by groaner who has nothing to contribute in a specific thread other than to just groan at everyone.

And closely related to that is the negative rep thing. I actually got one because I said something along the lines of "your (homo)sexual orientation shouldn't matter in the workplace and if it does, you probably don't want to work with such conservative jerks anyway" - and the negative rep read something like "yeah, those conservative jerks, they marry and have kids and don't dig in the s*" (I'm not kidding). I mean really?!?!

I got neg rep once that said they agreed with me from someone who has something like 20 posts and is never online. I still don't know if it was sarcasm or they messed up or if it's a bad thing to agree with them....

Your point is clearly moot, because you started the first sentence with a lower case letter.

I'm agree. Though I wouldn't use the F word, novelty to me. I'd say boring pedants. Purists? Which, also might be valid for those demanding to always stay in 1 language or 1 register.

Can we figure out some new fun and creative swearwords that wouldn't be vulgar? It's boring and uninventive. Knoedel. Hmmm...doesn't really work.

One word: Hypocrisy.

Btw, that politeness is rarely seen here. It's more like something that everybody discuss about but no-one has ever seen it. For instance, those wolves. Like.

I wish I found primitivism entertaining, or hurtful conduct, there certainly are opportunities to be amused. I think it's the shocking distance between expected civility and politeness on one side, and vulgarity on the other, that some find funny. In a Brit culture that is quite proud of having a specific protocol, refined manners, etc. I really enjoy that kind polite part, actually. I doubt back home about all the honesty and directness, which isn't always palatable, pleasant, nor a goal, tbh, if it hurts, just as hypocritical jokes and ripping on somebody. I think it's all in the delivery. Online comm does not offer a kind smile, but too many swear words..Smilies don't cut it.

The concept of humor is fascinating, something crosses well in cultures, some doesn't. We filter. The best book l've read on this in pragma lingv was by a Brit prof teaching in Asia.

Ego boosting humor and not being able to take criticism impersonally, is hypocritical, I agree with GM.

I am still curious about swearing without descending to daftness. But I was never good with name calling, don't see the value at all. I could swear at inanimate objects easier, probably. And not in my mother tongue.
