Hee hee. I think the OP means "pet peeve." :p

Mine is when someone creates an introduction thread but almost no one responds to it -- and yet so many people here get down on newbies for not making formal introductions. :msncrazy:

I wish people would perform a basic search before writing "I am sorry if this has been covered before, but I ... [cannot be bothered to look for my problem]
or [cannot think of a search parameter, as I have the brain of a fish]

If we ignore the question it looks offensive and not caring, but if we answer the OPs will never change their ways. So we have to answer gruffly, and that doesn't look very friendly either.

So please, please SEARCH before you post a question!

Textoch 24.06.2014 15:38

Re: What's your EF pet hate?

It's not really a pet hate, per se, but I wish that when one opened the "New Posts" page, the date that the original post was created was listed. That way one could tell if a post that had multiple pages was actually an old thread that had one or two new recent comments, or if it was a hot new thread with pages upon pages of current responses.

Not really a big deal, just a personal preference. :)

(Apologies, OP, if I have taken your thread in the wrong direction by posting a "suggestion" rather than something that truly irritates.)

Same here. And when it's pointed out, they usually claim they "of course know" that the country's not called Swiss, but "wanted to save time" - really? And how much time exactly does it save to type only 5 instead of 11 letters?

I'm torn on the issue of using the search function. Many questions are specific enough for an own thread, though they might be similar to other situations. But stuff like "can you post some English job websites please" - yeah, first, there's this thing called Google, second, there's a sticky in this forum on this topic.

The flip side is people using the search function, finding some thread from 2009 and then posting their question in it. Well it's probably OK then to open a new one in this case ;)

/Mini-rant over :D

I wish there was a way to filter the "new posts" threads according to what is belligerent and/or naughty and what isn't. :msnblush:

People requesting an introduction when a newbee asks a good and relevant question never asked or answered before.

People asking about what happens after a certain traffic infraction but never reporting back what actually happenend in the end.

It would be good to have any posts in which significant numbers of groans had been dished out marked as such, don't you think? ;)

I like popcorn threads a lot more than "for sale" threads as well. Having said that, there are definitely some entertaining "for sale" threads out there!

Watch out with that powerful tool, so we don't have to reinstate, it's an admin pita to unblock a legit IP.

Pet peve? Hmmm... people who are too self assured. Pushy. In any ways. Looks like it blocks some cerebral processes at times. But that's not exclusive to online.

Very true. But sometimes I'm asking myself ... are they for real with their questions and would we want to know the true answer in the end?:confused::confused:

Truth. At least some blonde or Jewish jokes, pics, recycled or home made memes :D

Good debates are rare spice of life, wish we had more. Without categorical or absolutist voice, though we all do it, one way or another. "Swiss" doesn't phase me, not typos, it's cosmetic. Tabs are horrid for typing, I have sympathy for fellow tab users.

Yeah, typos and "Swiss" don't worry me either in the grand scheme of things.

A Swiss buddie says "Swiss" in place of Switzerland a lot in our chats. First time I heard her say it, I chuckled thinking of how it's abhorred by many on EF. She also calls forests "jungles"! :D

Then again, she's not a "real" Swiss.

I like statistics. I'd love to see a table with "most groaned post", or "member who thanks the most", you get the idea.

PS, that's not a pet hate, sorry IM

People who respond to salary questions saying "Oh, the average Swiss family lives on much less than that".

I don't care what the average Swiss family lives on, quite frankly. If I ask this question, I just want to know if moving across the world is worth my while. Not to mention - the average Swiss family has an established network system in place that is oftentime not readily available to a newbie from another country.

Having said that...newbies, use the search function! :p

Indeed, the average Swiss family has a stay at home grandmother and aunts, know the language and where to get the best deals, and either already have somewhere to live or know someone who knows someone that can get them a great place to live. They don't need to pay for German/French/Italian lessons and don't need to pay for frequent flights home. Also, they understand tax forms and laws.

That's lovely, really. Makes me think of Manu Chao for some reason.

I induce pet pevees on purpose, makes people strong, heh. We have weird vocab games with friends, calling women wenches, pluralising where it hurts ears, it's a bit lame but it makes us laugh. Chimbly. Works great for song lyrics. :o

Poster have their own quirks, it would be silly to expect everybody speaking/writing the same, tbh. It's like with haircuts..as long as people don't hurt eachother, etc etc.
