Gaah! Very pissed off! [Next Direct import charges]

Just been completely done over when ordering online.

Ordered some clothes from Next Directory's Swiss website… paid in Swiss Francs. Have ordered from them before, no problems, very fast delivery, no import taxes to pay.

Just got an email from AAS freight services at ZRH. Pay 33chf francs import tax via pay pal now, or we won't send your package any further! …. I wouldn't mind so much but my order was 50chf… below the tax threshold I thought. Gaah! Very pissed off!!

Be pissed, be very very pissed, cos no sane person can work out why one is penalized. Me mam would have said "you can't have your cake and eat it" Shrug.

I was gonna say maybe you didnt count the shipping cost, but i realized shipping was free, so that is worth being pissed.

Re: Gaah! Very pissed off!

Yep! 50chf total! And previous similar orders have had no charge!

6chf is the tax and the rest is the admin fee

Re: Gaah! Very pissed off!

I stopped ordering from Next. I twice had problems the other way around.

I ordered 2-300 CHF worth of stuff, knowing that I'd get taxed, but it was worth it. But they shipped the order in chunks, each worth about 70-100 CHF, so I ended up with multiple admin fees too.

Re: Gaah! Very pissed off!

I've had similar problems with DHL and Marks and spencers- when there was free shipping DHL inputed a shipping charge which brought me over the tax threshhold. Similarly when I ordered 3 printer cartridges on a buy two get one free, they charged for the price of 3 catridges for vat calculation once.

I have stopped ordering anything into Switzerland that is not delivered by ordinary mail as la poste seem the only reasonable service here.

Re: Gaah! Very pissed off!

I had a problem with Marks and Spencers, too. I ordered below the limit, but they put 2 duplicate invoices in the package and the post office added them both together and charged me the tax plus their admin fee.

That was in the days before I knew about German delivery addresses!

Yes, called them, they didn't care, just said I was liable for any customs charges!

Re: Gaah! Very pissed off!

Just explain to them how Amazon and others do it properly - that the whole charge is for the items, delivery and customs charges.

And then point them at this thread because I would NEVER order from Next because of this. Amazon properties will do the holistic charging end-to-end....professional outfit versus amateurs?

Ditto, I phoned up and played hell, but in the end nothing was done. Now I order only single items below the threshold and have been fine so far.

Basically DHL and some of the other companies have free license to add their own arbitrary tax, and they abuse it whenever they get the chance. It's basically legal theft. I called DHL up to complain and the lady on the phone immediately started quoting a legal regulation that allows them to do it. That's when you know that they have no other real justification.

You could realistically have got that back, as it was a mistake on their side.

my girlfriend order a few hundred dollars of clothes from Nordstrom in the US I warned her about import duties and getting done like a kipper for admin fees but she called Nordstrom and they assured her there would be nothing to pay, and they were right, I've no idea how they managed it but properly labelled items arrived with narry a follow up letter demanding money with menances.

Maybe it just skipped through the net? I order lots of stuff online and it can be quite hit and miss what gets pulled up.

I have ordered from Lands' End and you can choose to pre-pay the charges and they guarantee you have no more charges upon delivery, or you can pay upon delivery. Perhaps that was what Nordstrom did and your girlfriend paid for it in the shipping without realizing it.

Re: Gaah! Very pissed off!

I never order from suppliers who ship via DHL. I've had too many bad experiences. One time the package was in two parts. They applied the full VAT to both parts. Eventually got them to sort it out, but it took months.

Re: Gaah! Very pissed off!

Been there done that. The DHL (daily hassle lol) like any other prick daylight theft company adds charges as they please. Had disputed once a bill many years ago and in result it all went to debt collectors in which case had to pay more than original invoice. Cannot win it just be clever and better informed next time.

That happens to us too. If something is sent via regular post then they only check a random selection of them ( unless they look suspicious I guess) so you've got a very good chance of not having yo pay anything. I'd say about 70% of packages we've had in the three and a half years we've lived here.

Same here. I never order from anywhere that ships via DHL these days as there are always excessive fees and they seem to arbitrarily make up numbers as it suits them. I've challenged them and got refunds on several occasions but to be honest I can't be bothered with the hassle.

I regularly get stuff via DHL from Germany with no charges, but these suppliers use the all-charges-included option.

Yeah Germany is better for that. Pity all the UK suppliers I use don't seem to know about or can't be bothered with this option.
