I literally LoLd reading about those perceived as loudmouthed, bigmouthed and socialistic...
And that the Ticinese have a love-hate relationship with the Italians (which they do).

I came here for the peace, quiet and solitude. Of course, with the F-18s flying overhead, the shooting range in the same village, fireworks and annoying kids upstairs, I'm moving to a quieter flat with better windows on the top floor.
Speak for yourself, I came for the chocolates, skiing and Schwingen and swinging parties

Re: Switzerland: The most BORING place. WARNING: Long complaining rant...

To the OP:
A Big ole North American continental hug to you.

I could have written your missile and probably did a few years ago in my journal. I've been in Basel for let's see...not even 2 weeks. I am envious that you have a job. I'm not even registered yet! It's a process and this is my second attempt at living abroad so I've been there, cried about it and lived it too. I can so relate.

I'm probably much older than you because friends - well they come and go in life and for the past couple of years, I haven't had any local friends. All of my friends lived at least 100 miles away or much further so I have learned to keep myself occupied and entertained. Thank goodness for the internet. At least you have a job where you're busy most of the day. I haven't worked in 8 yrs and that was not my choice. That lousy economy kept me from even being considered. Age discrimination is alive and well in America.

We recently came from Arizona (and before that the Midwest and Germany and Ohio, ha, NH etc.) and man, I tried everything to make friends over there without throwing myself in my neighbor's yard to speak to them every time they dared venture outside. It was impossible! And I spoke the language. I don't speak more than danke, bitte and genau and my husband (British) is fluent in German so it really sucks for me right now.

Here's my advice: I would do some serious soul searching this weekend. Discuss with hubby how this feels and see what he may offer. Maybe the job isn't right for you and you need to stop that. Maybe you need to focus on something else like write a book or start a journal. It's a great way to get those feelings out without telling the EF community too.

Be kind people. Everybody is struggling with something you can't see.

And if you want to make a new friend, send me a PM (If you can yet) and we can meet up. But one more thing, I don't talk on public transportation and if I do, I whisper. That way I don't offend anyone and nobody knows what I'm telling my spouse especially when he ticks me off and needs a tongue lashing.

Okay, that's my 2 cents. Life changes. Embrace it. It's only temporary and tomorrow is another day. I've moved so many times, I quit counting after 25 times in less than 25 yrs and that's only half my life.

Hugs.

Re: Switzerland: The most BORING place. WARNING: Long complaining rant...

Good luck to the OP to control the damage she's experiencing at the moment.

A colleague once told me :
"if you don't like it, change it. if you can't change it, accept it. if you can't accept it, leave it."
We went through this road and are now at the end of it, looking forward to leave.

Strangest of all things is that I grew up 30Km from the swiss border and thought I would love it to live here. But no.

That's how it goes but I feel for you, this vicious circle is hard to get out of. Our solution is a clear cut. We found the "waiting" position being the worst of them all.

Hope your family will find a workable solution!

Re: Switzerland: The most BORING place. WARNING: Long complaining rant...

Reading the OP it's very hard to comprehend how a person who claims to be so well-educated and experienced and having lived in other countries before to have such dogmatic narrow-minded opinions on Switzerland and its population. You must either be very young or too self-occupied to comprehend and analyze your situation and this country properly.

Nevertheless, considering the degree of unhappiness of your post, I believe the only option left on your list is to move away? You truly seem unwilling to change yourself or your views on your life and experiences here.

(Wo)Man in the mirror, like Michael Jackson says. Good luck.

I have to admit, I'm tired of the anti-balkan, anti-turk and anti-jewish underhanded remarks I hear from people. Or being told I'm not "one of those" foreigners. There is a culture of xenophobia here, and I stay away from it by surrounding myself with other non-conformists like me. The gender roles also bug me and it is difficult to be taken as seriously as a woman here. I don't like parties when the men get to sip whiskey while the women are stuck in the kitchen, which is why I always impose and make myself a nuisance with the drinking men in such situations.

That being said, if she followed her husband here, and all his friends treat her as the outsider and have weird comments like this (and these comments are really incredibly outrageous to Canadian ears), I can see how she would think they're all uneducated fools.

At parties, I generally am stuck in the kitchen sipping whiskey while I cook.

But if that's the case, she shouldn't blame "the Swiss" for her husband having shitty friends. I'm curious where he's from (the sticks or a city).

I don't want to sound insensitive, but it just sounds like she's making very broad generalizations from just a few people. I'm Swiss, I lived in Canada and I have a foreign girlfriend, whom I met in Canada. All my friends, including Swiss who have never lived abroad, are very accepting of my girlfriend. The same friends are also more open-minded than most people I met in Canada (granted, I lived in Quebec which I think is a lot more close-minded than the ROC).

This being said, I do feel bad for the OP. It's not an easy situation. Before we moved, my girlfriend did not enjoy Canada and also didn't have a great job situation, and I know how being in such a mindset can negatively affect the perception of the place one is in and the people. I do agree with most people that nothing is worth making oneself so miserable.
