[Not] Ripped Off by Centralgarage Bernet in Klosters

After a 3 day stay at Hotel Steinbock in Klosters my car would not start. As Centralgarage Bernet only 20m away is and my car battery was now low I visited this garage and asked for help. The mechanic came immediately & used a jump starter battery. For less than 5 minutes work CHF 100 was demanded. Even in an emergency this garage is one to avoid.
Most Swiss garages would give such a service free or ask you to contribute to their coffee fund. Seems a pity that there are people who seek to profit from the misfortune of others, but hopefully this posting will help to avoid others being ripped off.

Re: Ripped Off by Centralgarage Bernet in Klosters

TCS would have been cheaper also. But then it is Klosters that we are talking about....

I am also surprised that the hotel wouldn't have had a set of cables and someone who could have helped.
Did you ask them and they said no? If that is the case, I would think that they ripped you off rather than the garage, after all you spent three nights there and spent your money there.

Have you seen how expensive coffee is in Klosters?

Wow that's great! five minutes to get your car started and you on your way. I bet you were really pleased you hadn't joined TCS and had to wait an hour for them to arrive, which is what happened to me last time I was in Davos.

I would have thought that if a mechanic has to leave the premises to come and work on your car - whether it's 20m or 2km away - there would be a call-out fee. But I'm a newbie car owner in Switzerland, so I don't know. Can anyone else confirm whether jumps are normally offered for free?

I would have thought so too and certainly wouldn't have expected them to do it for free.
In the OP's shoes I would have been praising the garage for their speedy and helpful service rather than complaining about the cost. Maybe I've been living in Switzerland for too long.

Re: Ripped Off by Centralgarage Bernet in Klosters

Jump-starting, as I understand it, is a bit risky with modern cars. You risk frying delicate electronic components in both vehicles. A starter pack is fine, but vehicle to vehicle is to be avoided. I'm sure many EFers have jump-started modern cars many hundreds of times without issue, however

When I take my motorbike to Yamaha here base rate is 145chf before tax per hour.

Sounds like you didnt get a bad deal for somebody to travel out and get your car started be happy.

Besides even in the UK if you called a garage out to start your car what would you expect to be charged?

I offered my set of cables to the Cablecom people when they could not start one of their cars after working on our street. And I didn't charge him anything. They were very appreciative.

If you have a TCS membership the call is included in your membership. It really is good value for money. I don't think anyone from a garage will come and boost your car for free.

Re: Ripped Off by Centralgarage Bernet in Klosters

You're not a local, or a previous customer, they are never going to see you again ever, so why the do you think they should do anything for you for free???

Lesson learnt, buy yourself a battery booster box, or some jumper cables, and make sure your battery is good especially at this time of year

Re: Ripped Off by Centralgarage Bernet in Klosters

The OP (Anglo), gives his origin as GB. Odds are he's a member of either the RAC or the AA.... both of which have reciprocal agreements with the TCS about vehicle recovery, etc. in which case his little adventure would've cost him nowt.
Just sayin'.

Always, ALWAYS ask in advance for a quote.

Especially when it is somewhere you have not used & also during the holiday period, you were lucky to have a garage open.
