Try lighting up a ciggi in your seat and then see how "close to impossible" it is to let someone off the plane. I get your point though.

Anyhow, the airport is about half the size of Basel, so it's hardly Heathrow. They could have easily disembarked everyone rather than have them wait at the gate for so long. Despite what the airlines tell you, they normally know how long a plane is going to be delayed.
haha true

on the second point, usually yes, they probably know, but e.g. on said Miami flight, even the crew had taken their seat and sat there for hours on end. It was snowing badly that day and they kept de-icing the plane over and over again, so I don't think they knew more than the passengers did.

Re: Avoid KLM - the flag carrier that think's its a budget airline

Just for the record: I was flying quite a bit the last weeks and from the four flights I took on Swiss was not one on time. On the last one did the pilot even make an announcement in the line of "I'm sorry... we were a bit late on the inbound flight but then we also had a short delay as we had to check in some overweight hand luggage and you know: even the smallest delay throws us out of our time plan and then we need a new gate and time slot...".

I had better service at Asian budget airlines which for some reason never were delayed for overweight hand luggage while I am pretty sure that the people were carrying on way more than here. I think the era of premium airlines is simply over. It is more efficinet to let passengers wait for the plane than vice versa so this is what they'll do. Only thing that annoys me is that they cannot just make it official and plan it - you never know how much it'll be delayed and weather or not they change the gate.

Re: Avoid KLM - the flag carrier that think's its a budget airline

I've had no problems flying KLM, and as Alitalia recently did a status match with BA* I can wait in the lounge in Schiphol.

They recently had one of their Wednesday deals of 400Fr return to Beijing (from Basel). It actually priced to 386Fr including all taxes for random dates I tried.

Despite recently having some catering truck knock two huge holes in the side of one of their planes in Zurich, Cathay often have great deals to Asia. I paid 520Fr open-jaw into Thailand and back from Vietnam. Unfortunately that's from Zurich but I'll survive. Basically, if you're willing to break up your journey and transit en-route it's often much cheaper. BA right now have a 490Fr sale to Singapore (from Basel - via LHR T5).

* I'm BA silver, so now have access to all the Skyteam lounges even though I fly economy. I've just done the same with Brazilian Air and now have access to all Miles & More lounges too.

Another KLM tale just as a reminder to what shits they are.
I took 12 flights in July - Sept, 8 KLM, 2 EasyJet, 2 Air France.

Easily was KLM the better and the worst was Air France... by a long way, and I'd happily hop on a KLM flight again.

I was checking in for a KLM flight at ZRH and a young Italian in front of me then at the next counter was having a rant at the desk about luggage, and being charged to check his suitcase. The KLM girl was polite and firm and in the end did raise her voice (justifiably IMO). The Italian had booked via cheaptickets.com as it was cheaper than KLM direct, but failed to notice he took a deal with no checked bag... and tried to blame KLM.

They were speaking in English and poor girl tried every which way get the passenger to understand he bough a 'cheap ticket deal' with no hold baggage, he wanted to check a bag so had to pay. Eventually, he produced his wallet, shouting about how KLM was stealing his money, when in fact he's nerfed up the booking. I thought she handled the obnoxious, overbearing and arrogant git very well,

Doesn't it take a gold level on star alliance to be allowed into the lounge?

BA Silver (OW Saphire, which has lounge access) matches to gold on both Skyteam and Miles & More. So I'm now gold on those two (both valid to April 2017. Nice!).

Although I paid around 2000Fr in a sale, a crazily-routed business-class return on BA to Asia (bouncing around a few cities whilst there, too) gave me enough tier points to go from zero to BA silver after that one flight. It's valid for 2 years. As I make very regular return trips to London (always economy) I now just have to drink 2000Fr worth of champagne at Heathrow over the next two years and that flight was free! Yes, this is how my brain justifies things.

I understand that some delays happen totally out of the blue, but in many cases the delays are known and the cabin and ground staff have no illusion whatsoever as to being able to take off on time. Why then do they insist on boarding people anyway and will not break the news to them until the last minute? To me it shows disrespect for the customer.
To be fair, the crew are probably no happier about it than you. Imagine having to spend an extra three hours working with grumpy passengers. And potentially running out of hours at the destination and having to stop there because there's no free seats back home.

The cebu is an a321 and there certainly isn't a hinged access panel there, but it's not going to fall off that's for sure

And even if it does fall off, what's the worse thing that could happen? Loss of aerodynamics maybe?

I still dislike Swiss and think they rank somewhere between Ryanair and KLM. I've never forgiven them for charging me 700 CHF for a ticket (BSL-Vienna) and then being told I could have a yoghurt OR croissant - but not both... it was when they were trying to go all budget but hadn't quite worked out that means you also need to drop the price.
They still have not figured that one out; flew to Prague the other day with Swiss and some agent turned up at the gate with portable scales, weighed my carry on, and when he noticed that it was under weight announced "It's your lucky day!".

I always feel lucky when I have to (well - employer had to) shell out 600 CHF to be treated like that.

If they'd actually send their executives on an Easyjet flight to work out what's different, they might have somehow noticed that on Easyjet you can have as many croissants AND as many yoghurts as you can pay for (and they're bigger and tastier too), and that the refreshments trolley has about 100 times more choice than what Swiss' trolley has to offer.

And normally more choice and less "can't do" is something that indicates quality, is it not?

the "croissants" taste horrible, the "coffee" is the biggest nightmare that can happen to a passenger. besides i was/am always happy with easyjet. good rates and on time.

Yeah, what is that with the easyJet coffee?

I think it's actually supposed to be chewed like tobacco; that's the only way you'll get any flavour from those stupid bags.

I used to love the British Airways coffee on an early flight; they clearly set it brewing as soon as they stepped onto the plane, by the time it was served it was proper strength for a 6am caffeine shot.

For better or for worse, Easyjet have recently switched from those bag things to Illy coffee. For me that's a step in the wrong direction but I gather many people like it.
