Swiss 'Fish' species racism!

What is wrong with FISH Swiss people?

Why are Swiss people so racist against fish?

Whenever I cook fish it's always "uuuugh, the smell is horrible"..or "nicht Gern" blah blah blah..

...there are very few proper seafood restaurants in any city which is strange when you have France as a neighbour, just some poxy lakeside fish restaurants with ONLY (yes you guessed) lakeside fish dishes and no other decent meer frucht on the menu.

I will however compliment this country on its 'Frutti Di Mare' Pizza's and all other meat and vegetable produce available in the supermarkets, and even seafood you can buy (like crevetten for salads, lachs, etc) but again, how to make Swiss people disappear from a communal barbecue, stick some grill fish on it (which I might say, when I'm annoyed with them periodically, I do).

I'm thinking about starting a campaign group 'Stop Fish racism in Switzerland' ...poor things!

Ues, entirely agree.
We have an elderly Swiss friend who says she doesn't like fish because

"us fischelet" whatever that means. Do they not realise how healthy is fish?

äs fischelet "" means that it stinks. Much fish comes from the sea and is too old when arriving, and often not well stored. And then there is widespread prejudice against fish (but not against Tuna salad)

That's because tuna isn't fish. It's sea chicken.

If it's anything like their fruit, veg and meat, it's probably half rotten by the time most of it gets to the customer. No wonder they think it stinks.

In supermarkets it's fresh-as-you-can-get on ice, etc with great displays (like the French) especially in Globus, shame not many people buy it... ..why not give up fags and eat fish I say, very healthy and lots of protein!!!

Here swiss people, have some of this:

I may even start a Dorr franchise in Zurich, sure it would do really well!!

Re: Swiss 'Fish' species racism!

I really hope the post above was supposed to be in jest.

So much of the fish here is just terrible. Is it rotten? Technically, no. Is it truly fresh? No. Most of what's on display at grocers (including Globus) is just ordinary frozen seafood that they thawed out. (Of course, if it's frozen, which can be good quality, I'd rather thaw it at my convenience, rather than them thawing it and having it sit there going off at the store before you buy it...)

That said, indeed, the Swiss are generally put off by even the tiniest bit of fishiness (that's what they mean when they say "es fischelet"). It's just that they weren't brought up with it. So just as many Asians are put off by strong cheese odors that people here appreciate, the Swiss are put off by fish smells that others appreciate. It's just a matter of acquired tastes, exposure, and upbringing.

I think it very much depends on where you buy it. In some stores, the fish in the case has not been deep frozen and thawed. It's been chilled to near-freezing and shipped/kept on ice. You can definitely taste the difference between this fish and the ones that are rock-hard that you pull from the freezer section. Is it fresh-from-the sea? No, but it's still pretty good. Try it yourself sometime. Buy a deep-frozen fish and the same from the fresh case. Cook them at the same time (well, after the frozen one thaws) and in the same way. You'll see they're not the same.

As for fishy smell, I think that's a very personal thing. We've rarely found a fish here to be super smelly. However we always buy and cook the same day. I think some folks pick up fish as part of a weekly shop and don't use it immediately, don't keep it on ice (just chuck in the fridge) thus resulting in the smell.

We eat fish at least once a week. None of our Swiss neighbors or even dinner guests have complained about the fish being smelly.

Re: Swiss 'Fish' species racism!

My late father in law, Dutch, not Swiss was also put off by the smell of fish cooking. And yet, he loved his haring! I think it's more a question of ventilation. We need more windows in these concrete boxes.

We eat lots of fish. Having some tonight, in fact.
