Grass is like hair - the more frequently it's cut, the quicker it grows .......... the more often it needs cutting.
Just to clarify, what type of grass are you talking about?

Mine's push-along powered by me.

I often wonder why people (not you) get all these 'labour-saving' devices and then spend all that saved time and effort labouring away in the gym.
I use a scythe. Makes less noise than even a hand mower, but there must be some ultrasound as the neighbour's dog wails every time.

I also get kicks out of pointing at people who stop to watch while laughing my evil laugh.

Many of the indoor ski slopes are in winter converted to indoor lawns so the mowing compulsive can come and have their fun.

Next you'll be saying that you have to start at the bottom of the slope and garden uphill.

Obviously not on the lawn. Is that what you thought?

As a winter way to keep fit rather than constantly hitting the gym.

The average lawn mower produces as much hydrocarbons and nitrooxides PER HOUR as an average American car over 250 miles and as much carbon monoxide as said car over 400 miles.

Pretty good for such a tiny thing, innit?
Around our place nearly everyone has an electric mower which produce mainly a small amount of noise, use some electricity and basically put out no pollution, so I guess the average american car produces nothing also

No, I have an opinion as you do (i.e. you wrote you don't like robot mowers as the whine irritates you).

Sorry if I hit a sore point about the gym or whatever it was that annoyed you.

ok, to all that protect and justify the chronic grass cutters, here are two pictures I took this morning, but I assume they will just answer that it looks beautiful and that it is normal (I also assume that they are the type of people I refer to in the original post).

I had to keep quality low, but you can clearly see the tracks, the mud and oh, I am 100% that the grass you see here will be cut again this friday, saturday or latest next monday...
The left picture looks like there's a lot of moss underneath. The easiest way to get rid of most of it is to cut the grass low. But you can't do that in one stroke as it'll kill the grass, so you mow often and cut it gradually shorter.

so with other words, they do not really know what they are doing, but they feel it is a nice thing to do on a sunny day and what really happens is that they just pollute the environment even more (the grass mowers they use here are fuel driven), and they also add unnecessary annoying noise to the community, thus reducing quality of life...

...great. They are lucky I am not 10 years younger as I would have sabotaged the crap out of those grass mowers as they stay in the garage, always leaving fuel and oil marks on the ground, making the whole place smell like fuel, but then again, fuel doesn't smell as bad as constantly cut grass...
You sound like a true Bünzli, that thread you started now looks like a verbal view in the mirror. Since you are swiss already the only thing missing is your own Einfamilienhaus with a petrol driven lawn mower and an oil stained garage floor.

Re: Oh no, the grass warriors are getting ready...

Oh my God, you people will fight about anything. Enough already.

As a general rule, I think the Swiss cut their lawns much less than other cultures, but it varies by neighborhood. In our 'hood, there is one UK guy who cuts his grass on April 1st and we all hate him.

All the rest of us wait until the dandelions have had their day in the sun and we admire our lawns that are chock full of spring flowers and remind us of Alpine meadows.

Usually around the third Saturday in April, someone will venture out with their mower and then that's all she wrote. By Saturday evening, everyone's lawn is cut and good to go for the next two weeks. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Re: Oh no, the grass warriors are getting ready...

My garden is a town garden and although very pretty has no grass.

Went out yesterday and someone was mowing and the wonderful smell of freshly cut grass gave me serious grass envy. I turned to Mr Smackerjack and told him that I seriously miss grass cutting - he was not so enthusiastic

I know it sucks living in a villa out in the countryside/ suburbs.
You should move into the city where there are no lawns to be cut.

Re: Oh no, the grass warriors are getting ready...

If you cut your grass regularly, the clippings are short, you can forgo the grass collection box and the nitrogen-rich clippings can feed the lawn - which is surely better for the environment than constantly feeding with a fertilizer.
