Ever heard of the German word Galenics? The active ingredient just by itself doesn't make a drug, the distribution and metabolism of such an active molecule can be influenced by the "delivery system". Hence, the chewable tablet might be the best suitable delivery way for said active ingredient.
A chewable tablet may be the best suitable delivery system when all else works well... but when a known side effect of the drug is loss of appetite, perhaps someone needs to go back to the lab.

A dog whose has lost appetite due to use of the drug completely refuses to eat - and will not take a chewable tablet on his own. A dog who is refusing to eat will not take the chewable tablet disguised in other food. In any combination.

(Trust me, after 25 years of playing canine Apotheke I know pretty much every trick in the book.)

Chewables are generally so large that one cannot pry an unwilling dog's mouth open and pop the tablet down the dog's throat, as one would with a small normal tablet, without danger of the animal choking.

At present I am pulverizing the chewable tablet in a mortar and pestle, then dipping a bit of the powder on my finger, rubbing it on the inside of the dog's cheek or tongue. I have to go slow to avoid the gag reflex (again considering the nausea/inappetence.) Given how large the tablet is the process takes about half an hour. Twice a day.

If inappetence is a known side effect, an alternate form of the drug would be helpful. A slightly less effective delivery mechanism would be better than not getting a needed drug down the dog at all.

Thus my rant. It's mid afternoon and I have just finally got all the Belltie's morning dose down him.

And another rant: The decline of compounding pharmacies.

Re: The micro-RANT thread

Haven't they invented shootable medicine for dogs yet? It'd be much easier. They can bring down giraffes, lions & gorillas. You'd have thought a blow pipe mosquito bite thing could be invented... accompanied by the inevitable app.

Been there, already doing that.

(The Belltie gets one of his meds per injection. )

Pills, capsules, liquid suspensions, inhalers, injections, and the aforementioned pulverized (un)chewable... paws crossed, the Energizer Bunny Belltie still keeps going. And going. Thank doG.

I guess that's the opposite of a rant. I am so grateful that we have access to top notch veterinary care here in Switzerland.

Still hate chewables, though.

Re: The micro-RANT thread

People that bark at my dog. Seriously.

My youngest pup is a yapper. When outside, she barks at everything and everyone. She's a 9 mo tiny pinscher, the breed is know to be yappy dogs. We're working on it, trying hard to make her stop.

So why, oh why, do people feel the need to bark back at my dog, laughing happily at the same time? Do you find it funny? Can't you see that I'm trying to teach her to stop, and you're only making it worse???? I know a yappy dog is an embarrassment, and I don't need that kind of 'help' from complete strangers!!!

For the love of God, turn off notifications and stop checking your phone every 5 seconds and then MAYBE it might last the day.

I'm sick and tired of straight to voicemail messages because people can't manage their battery life

Indeed, speed cameras, BUT you are warned before the camera, and the cameras are in quasi hazardous areas. Not on a straight 3 lane highway with a speed limit of 45-50 like in some states.

Re: The micro-RANT thread

Dear New Posters,

If you cast your mind back to your Advertising 101 course, you might remember your professor pointing out that the first hurdle to ensuring your message is positively received by your target group is establishing trust.

Popping into a forum with a first post recommending a service, as a newbie with no forum bonafides or history, fails that barrier.

Doing so while pretending you have no connection to the service fails spectacularly.

Repeatedly dredging up dormant threads to do the above goes beyond the spectatular, heading well into epic fail territory.

Spamming a forum is just shooting yourself in the foot.

This PSA is brought to you by the Council Against Sock Puppetry. You're welcome.

I published an ad in a couple of websites to try to sell a car, and everybody wants to negotiate the prize without even seeing the car or even asking anything about it.

It will be a week until the laundry machines arrive at the new place. Now, I'm still at the laundromat. I have 60chf in my pocket. Of that, 50 are rejected by the machine because they are of a previous design and not recognized by the machine. Gotta find change...

As in, the machine will only take notes from the 8th series. Not the new 9th series that came out last year.

I've had this cold/flu/cough/gastrointestinal virus/sinus infection/whatever-is-making-the-rounds for so long now that I'm starting to wonder where Pretuval fits on the food pyramid.

Re: The micro-RANT thread

In December I tried to order an vignette for the highway in the post-shop. The site jumped from one page to an other, did not say I was not logged after I logged in, yet also didn't show I was. Showed the thing in the shopping basket, then somehow didn't allow the payment/delivery procedure ..... when it stopped flashing all the pages on the screen it was back on "order vignette here". Never got one.

Tried again yesterday ..... same thing. At one time the shopping basket even showed 2 vignettes! Lot's of jumping through the pages .... and back to "order here". ROFL.
Sod them. I'll send them the fine if I get one

Re: The micro-RANT thread

With an eye to making Easter baskets for all the kiddies back home, before leaving I bought a whole host of Lindt bunnies, in all flavors.

Carefully packed them in my suitcase, padded and boxed so that they could survive the journey, sacrificing valuable luggage space to do so.

But hey, Lindt bunnies, a little taste of Switzerland, a special treat. Worth the effort, no?

Popped into the local Chicagoland grocery store... only to be greeted by a display of Lindt bunnies by the hundreds.

At a quarter of the Swiss price.

Next year I’m bringing contraband Kindereggs. At least those will be a novelty.

Awww. Poor meloncollie...
Just read this to my OH. He told me that when he used to fly to visit friends in Johannesburg, he used to nip into the local Makro on his way from the airport to stock up on Toblerones, then pass them off 'gifts from Switzerland'.
