Robot bartenders?:

So bad was the situation that I remember recommending a major pub in Singapore to replace their staff with vending machines - 'twas thirsty times.

Are we therefore to presume Richdog you don't send your man-servant to the bar to order drinks?

Yeah, they are generally experienced UK bar staff and pretty good in general.
Trolling much? Not biting.

Yeah, people often leave a few chf at least.

Personally, I never tip unless I consider that I have had good service, and usually only if I have eaten too.

Oh, and...

Re: Swiss bar staff awareness when serving drinks...

I sent my formative years and mis-spent youth drinking in the pubs of the Midlands,London, and Brighton and don`t remember any patient queuing, `specially of a weekend. You go in, call out "five pints please when you are ready landlord" and Bob`s yer uncle. I`ve never had any trouble getting served in Switzerland either but once or twice in Basel been told to that I`m not next. Always thought that it was every man for himself.

Re: Swiss bar staff awareness when serving drinks...

Perhaps, one of possible ways to survive a bad service in Switzerland is to stop going out and being more pro-active hosting guests at home. House services like cooking meals and serving beverages and housekeeping service by missus are the best. Unless of course the fridge and pantry are both empty. Then it's time to find a way to blame it on someone in Switzerland

Our group is too big to do home hosting on a regular basis, not to mention not everyone has apartments suitable for hosting. Not to mention the amount of effort required to host people and then clean up the next day.

As fun as house parties and events are, it's just not a practical solution sadly.

Besides, I do like the Swiss bars in Zürich regardless of service issues!

Regarding Irish Bars - I do think that Irish Bars are the exception to the rule when it comes to prompt service, generally speaking.
There is nothing prompt in a pint of Guinness.

Re: Swiss bar staff awareness when serving drinks...

Tips? I never got no tips, apart from the odd beer at Christmas.

I worked well and gave great service because it was my job.

No, you're wrong. I run my own bar and, even as the owner, I get between 50 and 100 chufs a night in tips.

And what's that as a percentage of takings and how typical a Swiss bar do you run? Any foreigners come there for example? In New York for example, tips run about 18% of the nights takings. Here I've seen some people leave a couple of coins at best.
