Well then I guess buyer 2 doesn't need the item.
Oh come on... 15 minutes window to get an item? What happens if you arrive 5 minutes late? It's one extreme to another and not really common sense or practical.

For my part, for important items I try to take their number and give them a call to arrange, it's amazing how much more people will stick to a verbal agreement than a PM.

change it to 10:30-11:00 and 11:15-11:45 then - I don't have that much time to hang around waiting for a buyer though so I'd have two 10-15 minute windows. If one wants something one can get there on time, take an earlier train or whatevs if need be.

This is way too common! There are so many rude and inconsiderate people out there!

When we sold our sofa, we had one guy turn up over an hour later than planned, he kept saying he was on the way.. At least be honest and say you're going to be late! When he finally arrived he realised it wasn't a sofa bed, which is not a surprise when we didn't advertise it as a sofa bed!

Then the next guy arrived 3 hours late, my OH helped him load the sofa into his van, then he had the cheek to ask for a discount - after agreeing to buy it at a certain price! My OH just laughed at him.

Too many similar stories! Too many rude, time wasters out there!

Re: No responses, no shows, no payment and people just being downright rude!

I've posted things for sale and have had a couple of good experiences but sadly more negative ones...

I've had people messaging to ask if something is still available and then not replying, asking to save something then not turning up without calling to tell me they aren't coming.... and that latest is asking if I will accept 250 CHF for a sofa I am selling for 700... that originally cost me 3500 UD$

I'm going to go glocals a go today.... i'd not heard of them before thanks Patsycat.

Re: No responses, no shows, no payment and people just being downright rude!

I understand if someone needs to cancel an appointment at the last minute, surely we've all had to at some point. But when it comes to buying things over the internet, there are a lot of inconsiderate low-life scumbags who take advantage of time-already-invested to try to get a better deal. It can happen both ways, as a buyer or seller.

Examples from the US: I arranged to buy a guitar from an ad on Craigslist, for $75 (the asking price) I showed up after an hour's drive and they suddenly wanted $100!

My parents were selling a huge 2-piece solid oak dining room cabinet, weighing a few hundred lbs. A guy made an appointment to come and look at it. We dug it out of storage (old man has a bad knee, so no easy or painless task), moved it to an accessible area for viewing, cleaned and polished the whole shebang - just to have the guy no-show, then call hours after he was due to arrive and offer to buy it for 1/5 the asking price!

I like sites like ricardo or eBay, as people are obligated to purchase and aren't given the option of wasting one's time.

The Swiss, on the other hand, are usually punctual and prompt with their payment. Perhaps these experiences reflect the more global climate of EF?

The don't always pay Last two items I sold here went without a hitch at what I wanted for them but I had a couple of lowball PMs for the last one down to 25% what I was asking.

I hate to say it, but the people who mess me around are almost always expats. The Swiss seem to think a deal is a deal. Maybe something to do with the impression I have that expats seem to think contracts aren't binding (viz all the various threads on here trying to get out of things people have signed up to)?

Luckily I've had no experience like this yet, although I only tried selling stuff on certain websites. But you know you can always report such thing to the forum / fb page / website admin so they can do sg to those who do this.

What is sg? Txtspk isn't understood by some on this forum and thus is discouraged. Thanks.

Re: No responses, no shows, no payment and people just being downright rude!

I have to say my own "pre-moving sale" saga seems to be winding down to a fairly happy ending...

I sold almost all my furniture (good), a fair number of my books (to people who were very grateful), and a few other items.

The remainder of my books, DVDs and CDs have gone to an English church in Lausanne that has a weekly sale (not my church, but happy to support the work of this church).

I donated several boxes of stuff to the salvation army, and some cat boxes to a animal rescue in France.

I took a fair amount of cooking stuff to the dechetterie near my parents, where there is a zone for people to leave unwanted items for others to help themselves.

This week I have people coming by for one or two last items.

After a horrendous start, I have had relatively few no-shows, and no-one trying to argue the price with me at the last minute.

I did take a few car loads of things to the dump, but the vast majority was things which I knew I couldn't even give away.

And in the process of selling things I raised enough money to be able to afford to post 8 heavy parcels back to the UK, and I'll have a little over to enable me to replace certain items that it just wasn't practical to transport over.

So I don't feel I've done too badly, all in all.

But I would agree with the remarks of other posters - on the whole, the Swiss people who have bought things have been more reliable in terms of turning up and responding to messages and so forth than the expats. (Apart from the personal friends of mine who purchased items... but that's a different set of circumstances).

I like sites like ricardo or eBay, as people are obligated to purchase and aren't given the option of wasting one's time.
With Ricardo, both the seller and buyer are automatically sent each others name & address & email, possibly a phone number.

both Seller and Buyer can leave positive or negative feedback.

With Ebay the contact details are not automatically sent.
Seller cannot leave negative feedback; only positive or non at all.
Buyer can leave either positive or negative feedback.
Yes have had buyer change their mind, sometimes they have little reference and not much I can do about it, for all the rules and regulations of ebay. They can close the account anytime they want and open a new one.

Whenever I am picking something up, always ask for a phone number and quote my own. If there is a delay, will send them an sms on the way. It depends how far they are, I will usually message them to say, will leave at such a time, expect it to take so long, hope to arrive between X & X, i.e. 10am to 1030am etc.

When someone picking up from me, am used to people being late sometimes and not advising. Usually the more of a bargain the item is the worse people can be, i.e. selling a working microwave for 1chf. After 4 hours no show, sent the buyer a message to say I was now going out. Later in the evening received a rude message to say they had an accident and went to their brother, but no credit on their phone or sms to call me!

On the positive side have met some good people either buying or selling.

I do wish people who I am picking up from, would give some indication of how to find them apart from their address. i.e. My house number is 7, but it is opposite number 30 or we are near the petrol station etc

That's because you are female. Apparently the sense of direction is different. (That is assuming you have one at all, which I don't)

Totally understand. Other than no responses, no shows, no payments - I personally hate those who wrote to you like, 'How long have listed your ad? It seems no one will buy from you, I will do you a favour if you give me a 50% off discount.' I just put it online 35 min ago so I will take my chance.

I have to ask. Am I having a really bad run of luck when trying to sell my belongings or are these experiences par for the course?

So far, I have had:

People e-mailing me, sending me PMs or messages on FB to 'reserve' an item and then not responding to my message telling them 'Yes, you can have it and when would you like to come and get it?'

People asking me 'Can I come at such and such a time?', to which I respond 'Yes, of course' (sometimes cancelling appointments), only to have people say 'Oh actually, that doesn't work for me after all', or agree to come and then call numerous times to say that they are running late (in one case the person was running so late my dad and I had to call them and say that we had to leave my storage box because it was pitch dark and snowing heavily and we'd been waiting an hour and a half) or (today's example), people not showing up at all and not calling or e-mailing or giving any contact at all to say why...

People telling me they would like 'lots of things', but they don't have a car and what am I going to do about it / can I post a TV, duvet and microwave to them / can they come next week instead of this week (and then not getting back to me when I say 'Yes').

People (in this case someone from EF) asking me to post DVDs with a paying in slip, only to give no sign of life a week after the parcel was sent, not replying to PMs asking if the parcel arrived and - should I be surprised - not paying for the items.

People contacting me to say 'I want to buy such-and-such, you'll never sell it for the price you're asking but I'm willing to pay x', I respond and say 'OK', and they don't get back to me...

I could go on.

I've posted adverts on here, on Facebook and on Anibis and have had an absolutely awful experience with all three.

I appreciate that I'm in a particular situation because most of the items I'm selling are in my storage box, which means that I have to make a three-hour round trip to go there and my dad has to make an hour's round trip to come and help me, so something like a no-show is particularly irritating because it's not like I've just been sitting at home waiting for the doorbell to ring (I should add today it was 'just' my dad who was inconvenienced as I couldn't make it to the box), but even so... People are just so RUDE!

I have bought things from people online here that needed collection, and I always turned up when I said I would.

When I was in the UK and preparing to move here I got rid of a lot of my belongings on a mailing group when people could 'freecycle' unwanted items (recycle by giving away for free). Not once did someone fail to turn up to collect an item.

The last time I moved and sold items people came when they said they would and they paid what they said they would.

So what is it? Have I just had the misfortune to come across a particularly rude and thoughtless bunch of people or am I being too accommodating and giving the message I can be messed around?

And does anyone have any hints on how I can avoid this kind of thing happening again? Or do I just have to accept that this is the way things are?

ARGH!!!

Thank you for listening, I'm sure when this is posted I will feel much better...

Funny this...

I live in supported accommodation, in a new building that is partly the group home where I live and partly supported accommodation for people with mobility issues.

As such, my name isn't on the entry phone buzzer. Plus, there are two front doors (one for the group home, one for the rest of the supported accommodation).

So I always give my full address, with the name of the group home as well as the street name and number, and I always add something along the lines of 'Press the buzzer marked 'Envol', and ask for me.

Every time someone has come to pick something up I have had a phone call saying 'Hello, I'm outside and I can't find your name on the buzzer...'

Sigh...

Thankfully, I've had mostly positive experiences (mostly buying) from this Marketplace. But, there were the few times I reserved and confirmed, traveled to, and it was gone ... the worst was the time I went after work and with the crying baby ... I get that moving is stressful, but geez!

It's clearly that time of year again.... What planet are people on that they think you're going to drive a 3 hour round trip to deliver something for CHF 40??

But...your profile location says you're "up where the air is clear". That means you offer drone delivery service, right? Please leave the package on my balcony, as I don't want to have to walk down flights of stairs for 40 Francs. TIA.

Start your own FB feedback page in the selling group, copy their profile picture and list them under "time wasters and cheapskate cheap dealers."

Add phone number as well, after the first 3 are listed your sell to attend ratio will improve.
