Some people are racists, period. Are some Swiss racist, sure. I can personally attest that some Americans are racist, some Taiwanese are racist, some French are racist, and some Saudis are racist. Long story short, it is just another thing all cultures have in common. I don't think the Swiss are any better or worse when it comes to racism.
No doubt. But that's not bicycle's story at all, he claims 100% (obviously with the exception of a rare few ausländers who just so happen to also be eastern Europeans), and that makes no sense at all.

There must be something special about him, be that him being a troll on EF or something like in #272. Otherwise the frequency and ubiquity he says he experiences stuff like the following makes exactly zero sense:
Quote:
I arrived on a fair and stepped in a line to order some beer. There were two chicks working behind the desk. It was my turn and the chicks, instead of serving me a damn drink, they just uncomfortably looked at each other and froze for a few seconds. Then they simply ignored me and took order from guys who were waiting behind. WTF? Thankfully, there was also a guy who was working with them as a backup (probably an auslander). Apparently he noticed me and gave me that god damn beer which I managed to order in german.
The only times I've seen customers patently ignored is because they were fully drunk or simply out of place, including acting aggressively against everybody and their dog. Not even transvestites are treated like that everywhere.

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

While the number of blatant active racists here is probably the same as anywhere else, I think what is different here is the 'line'. That is, the point at which something said or done becomes considered racist.

In the UK, for example, the 'line' is far easier to cross - hence people are careful with what they say and do so as not to appear racist. Here, I do think it is far easier. People seem quite tolerant of that which others, especially auslanders, consider racist. The SVP make bloody sure of that with all their crap.

Here, people can get away with saying far more and doing far more before it is considered 'racist'. Whether that is good or bad is a personal call.

That 'personal call' in my house was, whether mum would sit us down and explain why what we'd said was wrong / inaccurate / rude / offensive, or dad would just give us a slap.

But hell hath no fury like my nan if someone spoke in that manner in front of her. 99% perfect little lady, but the 1% would come flying out all guns blazing in the face of bigotry.

You are not alone. Racist people are everywhere, sometimes Swiss can get really xenophobic if you're not Swiss, even French get glanced. Don't care what others say to you, just enjoy Swiss high quality life.

yes it can happen everywhere, but it'clearly very apparent for switzerland and some other countries, for instance like Holland and to a way lesser extend Germany. There were also some reports of snobbiness for nordic countries, however it's nothing compared to switzerland. Based on chat I've had with auslanders, Switzerland is a massive central for xenophobia, superificality, rudeness, unhospitality but mostly for snobbiness. Personally I've never encountered a country for which other expacts have so unified opinion as is Switzerland and even some swiss that I managed to have a chat with, admitted that.

Regarding "depending on persons". Yes it depends a lot. If one has non-swiss exotic look, i.e. is from east europe, balcans, other parts of the world and particualry if he's unattractive, then he's for sure doomed for struggle. For woman it's totally different story, especially if she looks attractive (swiss people import women).

Bullshit.

My Swiss wife has been married to two men with "non-Swiss exotic look", her first husband from Vietnam, and me with 3/4 of my ancestors from Eastern Europe. However, neither of us were imported.

Trust me, it's YOU!

Wow, you sound like one unhappy person. What keeps you here in this apparently horrible xenophobic country?

As to the first part: not my experience that this is specific to Switzerland or the Netherlands. In German they say: wie man in den Wald hineinruft.....

As to the second: importing women? If you mean marrying someone non-Swiss, yep, that happens. And that happens in every Country?

My granny used to say: "The little fat ones have to smile a bit more. But that's okay, because smiling is a good habit, and it often makes people likeable".

Being unattractive, just like being attractive, is a mixture of
- natural given body (genetics, which one cannot influence)
- what one makes of that body (with choices of grooming, haircut, style of clothing, but equally important how one moves and breathes in that body, the angle one hold's one's head and shoulders and so on, including sport, nutrition, and what one signals with non-verbal body-language)
- the mental attitude and emotional and relational behaviour within that body.

Year ago, I had a very ugly friend. The poor man had a very skew face and everyone who first met him automatically looked away shocked, or stared. However, he was the nicest guy! Everyone who watched how he moved, witnessed how he interacted, listened to him speak, felt blessed to know him. He told me that once he had understood that he was truly ugly (in terms of the current fashionable standards), he grieved, and then took a deep decision to get along in the world anyway.

He did not become servile or desperate, and did not lose his dignity! He just went around, for a decade or two, quietly asking people to tell him if they thought it would be a good idea for him to learn anything specific, or to change anything about himself. And he filtered the parts that seemed to work for him, and developed his wonderfully attractive personality and a generally kind manner.

racists is everywhere in the world, not just here..this is the truth.

be a HK chinese here, i speak no word in german (even so, i may understand some...but shy to talk), but only English...this is even worse..

you know, i have few experience already that people pull their eyes into a line, and say Chinese eyes, Chinese eyes?

or a small boy push my kids (he is mix, very western looking anyway) to the corner, and say chinese eyes, you don't speak german!!! (even so he speak german)

so sure there is the discrimination here! just face the truth.

but as i say, it is happen everywhere in the world, somehow we just have to face it.

So..why aren't you using your hard earned cash to make your life more interesting? Travel, take up expensive hobbies, buy all the books you want, eat the healthiest food you fancy, go to concerts, book some seats for Roland Garros finals...eh?
You can't be miserable in Switzerland, earning a good Swiss salary. Don't allow such a thing to happen man...

Btw, just you know, there are quite a few Swiss folks here so don't expect them to take these posts of yours so lightly...

Racism is indeed endemic to humans, with the possible exception of the Antarctic.

Not being a visible minority here, I've only experienced it when I've opened my mouth.

The only thing you can do, visible or not, is to communicate in the local language, and keep a sense of humour.

Not long after I arrived here I heard the story of a black man on a bus in Geneva. An elderly woman woman said something to the effect of "in my country people like you don't sit in these seats." (he may have been sitting in a reserved seat). His response, in perfect French?

"In my country, we eat the elderly."

Getting upset is the last thing that is likely to have a positive effect in such a situation. Communicate, show that even three armed people wearing foil hats are humans too.

If at all possible, try not to take it personally. I realise that this is difficult, but as an act of psychological hygene it helps to avoid falling into the "people like them" generalisations that lie at the root of the problem.

If you go out the door every day convinced that you live in a place populated exclusively by racist xenophobes then that is all you will find. You simply will not notice anyone who doesn't conform with your own preconcieved notion. You have yourself become a racist.

totally agree with you

trying to not take that personal, i am at it all the times...

but when its involve in really direct attack, such as other kids push my kids, well, then i must do some action, not aggressive one, but fairly to deal with.

I teach English to a lovely group of locals once a week. I'd love to invite some of you to an evening of exchanges of insights and opinions with them. They all speak at a B2-C1 level of English so communication is not a problem.

Any takers?
