The latter is questionable - there is a story of a guy from Zug (with a Ferrari 575) who used to frequent the "contact bar" in Bach (SZ).

I still find it amusing when you head into "valley" villages to find every shop having the same name "Walters Electro", "Intersport Walters", "Sanitier Walters" etc etc
Have you just given your surname away? Dodgy Ken Walters?

Don't be silly.

I thought you have figured out my family name from my most famous company - Ken-tucky Fried Chicken

Remember, there are still some Swiss folk who have never ventured beyond their own villages!
While I agree that it helps, you don't need to travel in order to have an open mind. Conversely, travelling is no guarantee for an open mind either.

Some however move across half the globe and take their close-mindedness and prejudices with them.

That's astonishing. Do you have a link to an online community of such people??

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

Racism generally doesn't bother me here, but I do see it more in CH than in other countries. No where close to majority of the population but a larger minority than other countries in my experience

Xenophobic behavior even more, and also politically incorrectness (which commonly hints at xenophobic thoughts).

Since it doesn't really bother me, I usually get a good laugh out of them, and generally speaking, such individuals are of lower education brackets, and simpler minds. Thus, if a conversation is to start up, it's very easy to mess with their heads and thoughts :P

Of couse, it might just be that many native listeners to Swiss radio do know what "f---" and "n-----" mean but see no reason to eliminate profanity. Does anybody know if swear words are usually bleeped out on in the local languages on Swiss radio?
They know what those words mean, but they do not know what "radio edit" means:

If you need a translation go to http://www.englishforum.ch/language-corner/
but do not expect you could air the English version in the "Land of the «Free»"

I didn't know we could swear on here. But if you say I can then I'll let you in on on a little secret. My favourite swears are ***ahh you see, i cant swear on here after all*** and twatwaffle.

why do they bleep it out on english radio if it's so hypocritical? Because it's not polite to swear. Or so I'm told.
Well then don't. Simples. Bleeping the swearing is hypocritical.

Of course you can swear on here: shit, fu.ck, etc.

(nope, "etc." is not a new swear word)

As adults, it does seem that bleeping the swearing is useless---we all know what they are saying.

But for children, this might not be so obvious. I remember listening to Snoop Dogg when I was in grade school (the edited versions) and singing along to all the lyrics and pauses with joy.

I must have been 17 before I heard the actual lyrics--at first I thought it was a different song, I was totally oblivious to what was actually being said beyond the censorship. If I had heard the actually words being said: they might have crept into my day-to-day language which could have gotten me into a lot of trouble.

Nor are they in Italy, France, etc.

It's an English-speakers thing.

When I first arrived here I enrolled at the University of Zurich. As part of the admissions requirements I had to do an interview with a prof to determine if my German was up to snuff. His first question translates to "I see you have a degree in philosophy, can one study philosophy in Canada?" I resisted the temptation to answer "Yes, and the academic selection process generally filters out the completely inept dolts _before_ the PhD level." and replied "Well yes, Marshall McLuhan and Jean Vanier would be two examples that come to mind."

I have also been told a few times by medical doctors that North Americans are all unhealthy because the only bread they eat is toast/Sandwich bread.

So it isn't exclusive to the uneducated.

Racism, more so than zenophobia is, to me, almost indistinguishable from stupidity. I generally try to avoid discussions with stupid people - since they are impervious to logic, the discussion always drops to a lower level - one can't "out stupid" an idiot, they have so much more experience.

There always used to be that happy little expectant gap (prior to UK royalties/radio thingy licence laws in public places) when a shop would be playing a track off the CD and you'd wonder if they were playing the original or the radio edit. I remember the deafening silence in Woolworths one Saturday afternoon in Bangor, North Wales following the accidental public airing of the Chrissie Hynde's version of Radiohead's Creep. I supposed they thought that would have a radio edit too... It seemed to take a while to find the off button if I recall correctly... I think a Saturday staffer had taken their own tracks in!

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

LOL- we can all come up with individual examples of one kind or another...

When I applied to Uni- the Head of Langs said to me 'You are Swiss aren't you? I am not happy about that!' - when I asked why he replied 'well you will be a native French speaker on the course- and a rôle model and if you have a Swiss accent, that's not good!' (I studied German, Environmental Studies and French as an extra- as it is my mt). He then went on to say 'you do realise teaching is not a hobby for bored middle-class housewives, don't you'!!!

I then decided to apply for the B.Ed.Hons at the poly instead as I was so shocked- and again I was asked 'does your husband approve of you doing the course- surely he has enough on his plate as it is (she knew him professionally)... She did apologize and we became good friends- but I could have decked her at the time.

The worst racism I've ever encountered was on Oahu. After 4 days of seeing it on a daily basis, I lost my rag and very, very nearly got arrested.

I'd go back to Haleiwa, but you can shove Honolulu and Waikiki.

I'd say they were both pretty sexist personally but not really racist.

Someone has been smoking a joint while I'm siting in the bus and waiting for departure. It disturbs me greatly. Therefore, I'm gonna give them my Ausländer rant. They should learn not to puff in public places.

Seems like a very general question. Can you please list some examples of swiss racism? I didn't think they were any different than other europeans.
You might mistake the Swiss e.g. they like you to know their language to have a good chance to get a job here. Not as bad as it seems? If someone came to the UK or US and couldn't speak the language would you also want to offer them a job? So we are all guilty as each other.
