It just human nature my friend. One foreigner is interesting. A group of them and it starts to be an invasion. Racism is all over the world and its been in my own country since day one. Basically its fear!
Actually, if EF is representative, IMO most expats are much more racist than the Swiss. Besides, Swiss love to travel and not always to places where our common Efer would go. "Travelling is fatal to prejudice...."

The Swiss are no more, and no less, racist than anyone else on the planet.

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

I do believe Switzerland is very little racist. DIdnt say that. The xenophobia is very low in Switzerland. Here only the "internationality" is lacking. I notice this repeatedly here.

FOr example I do have a Lebanese colleague. She is engineer. not using headscarf, nor is she a Muslim or does like the green party etc. For example she elect for the FN in France . None of the alleged pattern here you can use for her.
She grew up in France and feels french but she speaks perfect Spanish and English too. Thus she gets all the time strange comments in northwestern Switzerland regarding her not existing headscarf (mostlyi n job), big eyes why a female can work as ENGINEER... her religion etc. In Paris or London for example no body is asking her strange questions regarding religion, why she speaks so many languages etc. THis stuff she gets only in Switzerland or Germany.

My opinion....Switzerland is simply too small and a big Kind of countryside here. A huge farm full of nice people. That's not bad, but i do understand people who come from London, Hong Kong, Paris etc do have many Problems here to feel well and why many Colleges i did have left switzerland back to US; UK, HK, RUssia etc..

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

I was skiing in Verbier last season with a Swiss friend who speaks French, German and English, English with me. It was my first time in Verbier and getting on to the gondola I had some looks speaking in English by a small group. They decided to pick on my backpack and make a big deal out of it. 60% of the people on the lift were wearing backpacks. They joked in French with each other.

One of them wore a sticker on his ski helmet that read; "We speak French in Verbier" written in French and English. It's the first time I have experienced it. I have lived in Zurich for five years and never experienced anything like it before. I have had my good experiences skiing in the german speaking regions.

Nothing to worry about...Typical low class/calibre herdlike act. On an ontological level it's their raison d'etre without which they can't be or fall into a contentless desert of being.

I missed that post earlier- spot on I think. Could it be that Switzerland often attracts a certain kind of expat with a coockoo clock kind of outlook?

Luckily it's not only one type of expats/immigrants that Switzerland (or EF as a matter of fact) attracts...
I forgot to tell you welcome back!!! Really glad to see you back, Odile. It's good for the balance.

My guess that the sticker is a kind of humour, mixed with a little healthy local pride in one's own culture, and to distinguish themselves from the German-speaking areas, which are sometimes perceived as over dominant compared to the French-speaking and Italian-speaking areas, and perhaps from a certain kind of tourist who feels a universal entitlement to conversations being in English. Something like the Austrian T-Shirt with the saying "There are no kanagaroos in Austria" (to distinguish themselves from the Australians, while so many of the same letters are in both words).

@Zane81, your post made be wonder.... what exactly happened that someone "picked on your backpack"? I wonder what the "big deal" was.
And what, exactly, bothered you about what was said...

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

30 years ago i had a sticker on my car -

London, Paris, Geneva, Verbier

Who cares about this years bumper stickers from Verbier. I think they are quite funny!! I don't think they even think they are racist. They make their money. And are happy.

And yes they do speak French in Verbier. And probably numerous other languages. Including some you have never even heard of.

Enjoy you skiing in German speaking resorts, where you don't feel so attacked by the racist French part.

Sorry, this response is not to you doropfiz, but to the young person being silly

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

TBH Verbier attracts so many arrogant Hurray Henries with more money then sense ... and the Valaisans, being Valaisans, do get the hump about it at times- especially those who do not make lots of money out of tourists, and cannot live there anymore due to massively inflated prices hihi

Love skiing the 4 Vallées, but would never ever actually stay in Verbier, for reasons stated above

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

Switzerland isn't bad, so many languages spoken that natives are used to hearing colorful voices.
I watched a documentary about Australia where people got abused for speaking languages other than English, example were a man speaking Portuguese and a woman speaking French. Please note that Aussies are genuinely nice, friendly and welcoming people. Every country (including Australia and Switzerland) has few rotten seeds.

I think everyone has a bit of racism in themselves it's just human nature , then again I could be wrong

Indeed, thank goodness. However some recent threads have been taken over by those who were possibly attracted to CH for 'all the wrong reasons' - and they have certainly been a different kind of 'welcome' committee- lol (and so obvious and predictable, it's been really funny).

Merci x

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

Not sure Valaisan counts as French - Although I suppose there are very few real Valaisans left in Verbier - and those who are still there made sure they lost the accent and adopted more a Genevan 'Grande Gueule' sound, or Parisian- better to sell Real Estate, lol.

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

Come on, i like my Valaisan friends!! I am Vaudois - so near enough.

I can't even remember the times i have been to Verbier, too many, it has become rather cosmopolitan. Nowadays it is the playground of the rich.

When i went with friends we had a great time.

Even now, if i saw that sticker - Bof!! We speak French in Geneva too!! Even though if you were wandering around you wouldn't think it .

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

Plenty of Valaisans friends for me too lol.

But the Valaisan and Vaudois accents are so so different- honest. As different as Scouse is to Geordie.

And there my friends lies the answer. The Swiss are not racist but more rural conservatives regardless of where they live, rural conservatives maybe not PC but that in itself is not racism. Look at rednecks in the USA or yobbos in Australia absolutely not PC but (mostly) not racist, maybe uncomfortable around other peoples or cultures but that again is not racist per se. So you live in a nation of farmers, don't expect them to change to make you comfortable.

With 25% foreigners and another 10-15% born abroad that's nothing but utter bollocks.
