About Me / Your Profile on EF

I've noticed lately that the majority of new joining EFers either don't fill-out, or suppress the basics of their "About Me" profiles.

While I'd recommend this approach 100% to children or young adults - it makes trying to give any good advice on relocation or adaptation to Swiss life a full-time, teeth-pulling experience.

Typically:

a) I want a new job and it has to be in Swiss because that interests me and would be the best environment for me or help me because of my dissatisfaction over my current (un)employment and / or over-qualifications here in my own country, having already a PhD (unspecified). The childcare support system seems to be sub-optimal (crazily expensive) by the way

or...

b) Please let me know where I should should live in Swiss, what I should do according to my (non-specified) qualifications, what I should earn, the cost of living (sometimes the family number is specified), and how much I get if I don't find a job.

etc, etc, etc.

Demotivates from wanting to help - at least the basics should be mandatory info.

So... your profile was originally statistics and your postal code, and now you've reduced it to just your statistics?

Re: About Me / Your Profile on EF

The problem is that people keep answering the questions.

When a newbie, with no profile info, comes along and says "I wanna move Swiss what salary?" the correct response is to ignore them or laugh at them. Instead we get huge responses and URLs and links pointing to all sorts of salary calculators, people arguing over which city is the best to live in etc only to discover it's some non-EU British citizen trying to set up a business selling fake bomb detectors or something.

So there's no incentive to give more info either in the profile or the post as people will wade in with opinions anyway.

And the answer is Basel, 135,000 CHF.

I personally think that users should be forced to declare their salt preferences.

Re: About Me / Your Profile on EF

Yeah but if you write unemployed to your occupation (as I did), some people really take that with utmost seriousness and don't really care what you ask or answer. I find it really interesting and quite fascinating I don't want to mention the non-EU part: no you can't do this, it's not allowed, forget about it, impossible, Swiss ways etc. etc.
the whole world is bored

Re: About Me / Your Profile on EF

At a certain point moderation also requires changes to the forum structure.

I've seen other forums where advice of this type (repetitive, speculative and individual) is subject to the OP providing some basic facts according to a checklist pinned to the top of that section.

Sounds pretty good with someone of your profile.
Any self-published self-help books by any chance?

Of course! But you can't have one as it defeats the purpose of self help.
