Food Poisoning from work

For about the 5th time in the last 2 years I have been struck down with severe food poisoning from work - not slightly loose movements - but full on evacuation from either end - every 15mins - for 8 hours through out the night.

Only once I had cleared midday today was I able to keep down a Buscopan to take away the cramping.

The first couple of times I let it roll, it happens, its not ideal, but I survived. But now I have the feeling the company are out to kill me! You should feel safe eating at work - but now I don't.

Last time out I did complain (and got 10 free lunches) - so considering I won't be going back there again - what should I pitch for in terms of compensation this time.

Can you blame them?

Email your superior and HR and depending where you work, possibly the office coordinator or legal representative of the company. If all fails, engage a lawyer or possibly put one of your shyster lawyer friends in CC, just for good measures.

5 times in 2 years? Even my Ex wasn't that blatant!

Are you the only one who gets this from the canteen food?

Re: Food Poisoning from work

At work ? You mean from the works canteen (staff restaurant) or some fast food joint nearby ? And your colleagues have all been struck with similar symptoms ?
Anyway, get well soon.

Re: Food Poisoning from work

Take it you're eating in a company canteen, is the food fully prepped and cooked on site, or is it shipped in an re-heated? That's a minefield in itself.
If you've been ill that often then they've got a serious hygiene problem somewhere in the food preparation area and Elf and Safely needs to be called in!

Also try to find out if anyone else has been ill at the same times, and make sure they also complain.

Ask for a lunch allowance which will allow you to eat somewhere else, and make it very clear that you will not be eating 'in house' until they buck their ideas up.

Hope you're feeling a bit better now!

I would say that the Democratic Republic of Kenistan needs to establish some new health hygiene rules .

Painkillers. And a microwave for your office .

Also find out if there are other forms of Buscopan/other useful meds in case of food poisoning which you don't have to swallow - maybe there's a version which melts on the tongue like some anti-emetics do.

If it's a public place probably it should be reported to some authority? If it is food poisoning (I believe you have FP from the way you describe your situation, but many people have similar symptoms due to a bug rather than real food poisoning and think they have FP), a doc might be able to narrow down the cause, and that might be very handy for the place which should make sure that the place you ate at improves whichever standards weren't up to scratch.

Re: Food Poisoning from work

Was a couple ' years ago, but had problems each time I worked out of the London office.

Also present when the janitor exposed the cockroaches in the office coffee-machine water.

Not sayin' that still exists...

I guess that at lunch time, they are under a bit of pressure and may make a few shortcuts to ensure the customers get their meals on time:

It is actually beneficial because a few bugs harden up the customers' immune systems so they become resistant to a bit of Campylobacter, Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, Botulism etc.

Re: Food Poisoning from work

Are you sure it's food poisoning (and a "severe one" at that) and not just an allergy or overreaction of sorts?

I'm asking cause I had food poisoning once, essentially couldn't move for almost 4 days and thought I was gonna die. A few measly pills wouldn't have fixed it - more like tons of drugs. Almost went to the hospital too and I hear that's usually where you end up if it's indeed severe poisoning

Timescale, symptoms and the evacuation from both ends indicates food poisoning - and after my meeting with them last time I suspect they've had other instances.

I've been "allergic" to alcohol a number of times and this is not the same thing - nothing beats the retching up bile or absolutely nothing - every 15mins for 3 hours.

I will be speaking with the external company that provides the catering and also the internal supply management on Monday to discuss.

Re: Food Poisoning from work

If it's actually food poisoning you're quite unlikely to be the only victim, try to find others to increase credibility. Inform your kantonal Lebensmittelinspektorat to have them take a very close look; if it's the caterer there are bound to be other afflicted companies so hopefully yours isn't the only complaint.
