| | Re: 9 months in Switzerland - a honest report. | Quote: | | | | | Who said greenmount is snapping their fingers at waiters? I don't remember reading this anywhere in this thread. You immediately assume that anyone who you perceive as rich or successful is a snob. It is the same attitude towards successful people in high schools. The others mock them as if it is a crime to be hard-working. | | | | | My post wasn't directed at greenmount in any way, shape or form.
I happen to have a fair few friends who are rich and successful, but I didn't know that about any of them when I met them. In each instance, I just met a nice person and we hit it off. With two of the guys, a small group of us grabbed several bottles of wine and sat on the beach all night talking and having a laugh. It was a while later that I found out one guy was a 50/50 partner in a chain of prestige hotels and had a personal fleet of helicopters, and another of the group was an industry leader in his home country. Both are multi multi millionaires, but I neither knew or cared. A third member of that little group of drinking buddies kept so quiet about her public profile, that I'd dined with her and her partner every night for a week, and only when people came over asking for her autograph, did I even think she might be someone other than a "writer".
Then I happened to be an invited visitor to a certain UK hotel where I was asked to creep down a corridor that passed the (Russian) boss's office, even though nobody knew if he was in the building or not. The reason given is that he's prone to instantly dismissing any member of staff that he hears walking in the corridor. WTF?!!!! There's a guy in my home town who is absolutely despised by many because of his big I am attitude.
Feeling like a broken record, particularly after the smoking thread, but 90% of who we are is an accident of birth. The rest is parenting and having the good grace to learn good manners. People are people and all deserve respect, until they behave in such a manner that makes you lose it for them.
There's no crime in being hard working. There's no excuse for being rude.

...the hardest thing in this world is to live in it. (Joss Whedon).
Living here can be tough, and not because of any particular hardship, just because. Because we're lonely, or confused about something we've read but not understood, or because of the two very wide ladies in the pull down tram seats who don't give a flying whatever that you and another parent are trying to get your pushchairs on/in... But it can also be tough where we came from, for a myriad reasons.
If I'm feeling charitable, which I am trying to feel of late, I understand where the OP in part is coming from. What I don't understand are the vitriolic sweeping generalisations. But that's me.
And, for those keeping count, I've been to work today, I'm home to do my other full time job.

I am nothing but content with my life here. Why are you on EF if you're so happy in Canada? This is for expats in Switzerland.
Cannot wouldn't understand that someone can (partially) agree with OP or other posters despite their own experiences and feelings being different. After 50 years in Canada his language skills still suck.
Sorry, couldn't resist. This forum makes you. I admit - they always win. | | | | |

That would make the forum much much better wouldn't it. | | | | | Yes, a nice homogeneous forum with a collective hatred for "The Swiss", backed up by lots of fuzzy-detailed (and suspiciously timely ) anecdotes to give your points water-tight and indisputable proof.
Of course, not forgetting a general agreement that everything is far better "back home" and lots of mutual back slapping for everyone agreeing with each other and not challenging each others opinions.
Sounds like hell.

*long rant*
*people asking about rant*
*people teasing OP*
*people confused about particular aspect (looking Easter European in this case)*
*first tangent*
*OP responding in way that divides readers into haters and amused*
*second tangent*
*infighting and smart-aleking*
Does that sum it up?
As for "looking Eastern European", there are so many cultural groups, it would be hard to say. But maybe he is referring to the typical "Ivan" as cast in many cold war films, then having a flattish back of the head, prominent ears, fairly dominant brow bones and often an underbite, combined with pale skin and eyes is probably how you would describe him. Considering that Russia stretches all the way past China, this may also be a "looking like a Russian" option. Who knows.
And you know what any nationality can smell? Hostility. It's a survival thing.
