Management speak - don't you just hate it? Emphatically yes, judging by readers' responses to writer Lucy Kellaway's campaign against office jargon (see link, right). Here, we list 50 of the best, worst examples.

1. "When I worked for Verizon, I found the phrase going forward to be more sinister than annoying. When used by my boss - sorry, "team leader" - it was understood to mean that the topic of conversation was at an end and not be discussed again."

I get a different set of problems. For some reason the word 'namely' appears in inordinate numbers of papers from non-English-speaking groups. Whenever it appears, it's always unneccessary and I've now got a real aversion to the word.
"The compound, namely XXX, shows..."
why not "XXX shows..."?

That's mainly Swiss German "...., oder?" but also used in High-German. Same as "isn't it?" in English.

Ah, if it was just the Germans, I could understand, but it's everyone else, too. Chinese, Indian, French and Saudi groups are a few that I've seen lately with it.

When I was working, which was admittedly a long time ago, my boss would tell me to 'square the circle' another was that we shoudl be careful because X is 'hugger mugger' with Y. What on earth is hugger mugger. On my last day I asked her, she grew rather flustered and walked away.

When I worked for a large consulting company we would always joke that partners had a set of standard comments they could always send over at 2am to keep the team working on a presentation. Those could look like:

"Slide 10 - make crisper
Slide 11 - what's the so-what here?
Slide 13 - we need to be more granular
Slide 14 - good analysis, but sexify presentation
Slide 16 - take this to the next level

Overall structure: Some good thoughts, but comes across lacking clear so-whats. Think of pyramid structure here. Check spelling and formats (I spotted one slide with wrong font size).

Good job, guys - don't spend more than another 2-3 hours on this tonight and then send off to India. Talk to you tomorrow 9am to discuss next draft."

Hmmm.... i would suspect you are reading a something done by folks influenced by latin languages. It is direct translation from an expression that is used quite often in technical jargon. Basically, they mean that within an universe of compounds, that one specifically shows....Of course XXXX shows, but the author feel the need of giving a broader definition of the compound.

Like in fruit, namely bananas, has a lot of magnesium - which is a bit different than bananas have a lot of magnesium.

It is just a completely different way of structuring setences... Other than this, we are normal
