Re: Indian restaurants Zürich

Chalet India in Horgen has improved a lot but I've also had inconsistent experience there. For example, Take-away seems to be always excellent but the buffet isn't very good.

Another option for good Indian food in the Horgen region, if you don't mind take-away, and like low(er) prices is here: https://www.facebook.com/spiceboxthalwil/

Re: Indian restaurants Zürich

These Indian restaurants never do a Thali which is is great to savour alot of tastes. Stupid . And the only reason is that they would make too little profit on such a thing. They want people to order separate dishes at 20CHF plus each.

try a Thali at Tamarind Hill (https://www.tamarindhill.ch/) in Oerlikon and thank me later. Food served at TH is fingerlicking good. I also recommend their mixed tandoori platter.

That does make me laugh - when you show people that you can order one dish and share it between two with a side of rice or naan etc. it's like a life changing moment for many...!

Yes. The Swiss don't like to share so such a major event does not happen too often. Glad this has been a turning point in your life. Hopefully for the best

Pakistani food and North Indian cuisine is basically the same...so that's negligible.

There is of course so much more Indian food to explore such as South Indian, West Indian, Bengali cuisine and the list goes on...

Most of what you find in Zurich is North Indian, there are some South Indian spots...the only one I've found to be decent is Shaanti in Interlaken where they offer freshly made Dosai.
Seriously? What cuisines have you tried from UP, HP, Haryana - all 'north Indian' states?

Pakistani food = Punjabi food (at best)

here is an example of a 'typical' North Indian dish. I doubt if any non-Indian EFers have even heard of this..

A couple of years ago I had one of the worst Indian meals I have ever had at Chalet Horgen at a lunch buffet. It was not great quality and they were incredibly slow to replace empty dishes.

I've never tried the Chalet India lunch buffet (for some reason, lunchtime curries don't compute with me) but I must have eaten from the standard menu 50+ times over the years without disappointment or later complications. A favourite restaurant is not just the food, however. The staff are friendly and helpful, the view lovely, and I'm often there when friends or family are visiting so perhaps I have happy associations.

On a similar note I have enjoyed the food at Namaste Oerlikon (which unsurprisingly is in Oerlikon) and I suspect the "Mother restaurant" Namaste India in Kreis 4 should also be OK.

The menu offers no huge surprises but the food itself came in reasonable portions and was tasty. I did try the lunch buffet and wouldn't recommend, but for dinner it was good.
