Re: Indian restaurants Zürich

Just following for all of the restaurant recommendations, thx! Don't want to start a whole new thread but would love any other recommendations for Korean food as well... Haven't been super impressed so far. Adding all of these Indian places to the list for date nights. Thx!

Re: Indian restaurants Zürich

heres a flashy one on the lake outside Zurich

https://www.chaletindia.ch/de/

But I cant understand why they cannot offer a Thali in these Indian restaurants!

I think its got to do with making too little money on a Thali

Seems to be more a place for groups.

Re: Indian restaurants Zürich

Some places do offer Thali but only for week day lunches.
I can highly recommend Namaste in Oerlikon.

Re: Indian restaurants Zürich

Anyone been to the Taj Mahal in Altstetten? Apparently it's where the AKARAKA (which moved to Badenerstrasse, after having been highly successfull at the smaller old location - understandable, since it's one of the best Korean places in Europe) used to be.

Reviews of the Taj Mahal are excellent (4.6 on Google, 4.7 on Eat.ch, 4.5 on TA) and I wonder if anyone has been there before (either lunch or dinner?)

Re: Indian restaurants Zürich

There used to be a great Indian restaurant in Langstrasse Zurich called Aggarwal-they did the best Thalis in Zurich-and all for 15 CHF. None of the fantasy prices that Indian restaurants have these days. The restaurant has been gone for many years

A pity, but maybe they couldn't make a profit at those prices?

That was 10 years ago or more when prices were " sane ". They could still do a thali for a similar price now.

Re: Indian restaurants Zürich

There is another in Langstrasse called Thali House. Have to check it out

If the food is as good as the pictures-which is highly unlikely!

Re: Indian restaurants Zürich

My two cents: in my opinion the taste of the dishes in Indian restaurants is highly dependent on the country you are in. I don't know if they adapt the recipes to the local taste or if it's simply because the cookers originate from different Indian regions, but I never found a restaurant here in Switzerland comparable to the ones I tried in France or in any other country. I don't say they are better or worse, I just say they are different.

But for sure, one of the worst Indian restaurants I tried was in the UK The taste of the dish was not that bad but it was incredibly fat, my husband as well as I had difficulties to finish it (although we are usually big eaters in Indian restaurants). Not fat enough for the couple sitting next to us apparently, as they ordered French fries with their curry (it would never cross my mind to even think about ordering French fries in an Indian restaurant). It's maybe simply a cultural matter, because the restaurant was rated as really good by the locals.

Like any other restaurants, in any country you can get good and bad Indian restaurants.

I've had some amazing Indian food in the U.K. but most of it seems to be a generic North Indian masala of meat in an oily tomato-based sauce.
Which funnily enough is exactly how I would describe the last Indian meal I had in Paris.

I wouldn't think of ordering French fries in an Indian restaurant either and I'm from the U.K.
I'm not sure it's cultural - it's just that some people in the U.K, whilst they feel that eating an Indian is awfully adventurous, also feel a 'dinner' is not a dinner unless it has a portion of potatoes with it.

Re: Indian restaurants Zürich

I did not mean that Indian restaurants in the UK are all awful, I just said one of the worst I had was there (as an answer to the original post actually) Because for sure you can find the best and the worse in any country.

Regarding the cultural aspect, in most of the Indian restaurants in France you will find cheese nans filled with a sort of cream cheese. Never found this kind of cheese nans anywhere else - when they have, it's generally filled with another kind of cheese. That's what makes me think about a cultural aspect / adaptation to local taste.

I'd recommend Friends' Corner in Josefstrasse. Best price in town.

Was once there. I can only describe it as BAD! The SWiss deserve something better than such a crappy place! These Indian cooks ( usually males )-if they are Indian generally have no idea of cooking. But I will check it out again. If I dont like it I wont pay!

And the Sri Lanken one opposite is also great. My SL buddy takes me there everytime he's in town, he says it's just like mama makes!
